We have a thread like this for Autocross, how about one for the big tracks?

I got my Mazda2 out on a real track for the first time last weekend, at a "twilight" event on Streets of Willow. Really cool event, five sessions with two in the afternoon, one at sunset, and two in the dark with stadium-style lights at the important apexes. I've flung my car around my fair share of canyons, but it's a very different beast at track speeds, with a shocking amount of oversteer for an FWD car, and I identified quite a few upgrades I'll need to make before I'm happy with its handling on track. (Shocks, front sway, camber bolts, track tires and wheels...)

I ran a best time that put me in the middle of my run group, which was largely track-prepared Miatas, S2000s, and M3s, and I was on street tires, so I'm pretty happy with how I did. I lost less than two seconds to my friend's 2, which had real trackday tires on it and a half-stripped interior, so I'm satisfied with that as well.

Here's a helmet cam video of the sunset session where I ran my best time, a 1:40.9.

Did you mess with the tire pressure at all to change the amount of oversteer between sessions?

That looks like a blast! What mods do you currently have?

Racing Beat springs, Corksport rear bar and SRI, and wheels and tires.

I probably should have but didn't, I just drove around it. It was a problem I was having mostly on high-speed corner exits and I'm not quite sure how to tune for that with tire pressure. It's definitely largely the result of the car bouncing all over the place with stock shocks and aftermarket springs, though.

I am not sure how to on that as well with the tire pressures. I was mainly asking about the oversteer you mentioned in the original post.

This is me against Max Papis at Harris Hill Raceway. One lap race with standing start.

AIM Motorsports were in town for the Grand Am race at COTA and needed to do some testing on the Ferrari after problems at Daytona. So they came out to Harris Hill. I was at the track using the shop press at Soulspeed when the track owner came up with this idea of Max versus me during the lunch break. The Fiat is his rental car, and my 2 is a bit more prepped. I got him off the line (Pro Solo start technique) and into Turn 1, and he was never able to catch me. Great guy, fun time.

PS: Max's testing in the Ferrari resulted in a new lap record at the track...besting Price Cobb's previous mark in a race-prepped GT3 Cup.

Awesome. Racing against Max would have been a hoot.

I really enjoyed taking a 2 around Harris hill last year for the track day we sponsored. Best part of it was the car had the pads at metal on metal on the driver side which made for some fun braking.

I was wondering who messed those brakes up... :)

I take that car out periodically and tried to do so the following week.

I actually got in the car with the brake that way, lol.. I asked Dave about and he said just go with it.

Found a shot of my car on Big Willow from last weekend's Mazfest, hope the photog doesn't mind me reposting.

I forgot how high people sit in the 2 with the stock seats, it looks like you are hitting the roof. Looks like a blast!

Talking about seat Derrick , what do you think of the Corbeau Forza sport seats. The price is low and I wonder if I should save up for a better seat like Sparco Pro 2000 or Evo 2? What seat do you guys use in your race cars?

I see too that no one that is racing is using aero upgrades like 3dCarbon front lip. So the 2 has a good enough down force or it will add useless weight and drag to the 2?

I actually just put an order in for a black cloth Corbeau Forza... I had the Fx1 in my mazda2 and loved it but i sold the seat with my drift car and miss having a racing seat... If you wanna hold off on ordering for a few days-to a week tops i will have the seat in with pictures and do a small review for you!

What was the quality of the seat you had , there's talk about it making noise and being uncomfortable. I think these guys that crys like that need a reality check...320$ for a FIA seat wow ;)

Can't wait to see your new seat bud , you got the bracket from Rob right?

Well my FX1 was terrific quality and I had many hours of seat time in it too back that opinion up!

I love corbeau so so much they are the best bang for the buck in my opinion!

And i have had the bracket a while I cant even remember who i bought it from haha

Nice , I'll save some money with those seats ;) I'm going for the Forza Sport , don't know if I'll get the black or go balls out with the black and red. I think Rod has the brackets. Love the oem seat for roadtrips but they have no support.

I was thinking about going red but my 2 is blue so i took the safe way out haha it was tempting though i do love the red! And i agree the OE seat was nice for long trips i have done many in both seats with the fixed back corbeau you do get sweaty and tired after a while (i took it to dallas 3.5 hour drive) and it wasnt so so bad but hey BECAUSE RACECAR oh and one more thing with the planted bracket and the bucket seat you sit a bit lower it's very very nice!! I'm excited we will both be rockin Forzas man

Yep , Forza powarrrrr lol I'll be ordering mine next spring so stay tuned ;) It will b red if I can find a comfo matching seat like a CR1 for the passenger side. If not it will be black.

Just looked and I think the VX2000 looks more like the Forza Sport. It may be a good match , making the wife happy. Or I only change the driverseat and leave the passenger side alone ;) more money for other parts. But Ilike matching up stuff.
