Resuming Playback with 2014 CX-5 GT Tech Stereo and other issues

One because my iPod can hold a lot more music than my phone can. Two because Bluetooth audio is compressed and doesn't sound as good as a direct connected iPod. Third because I want to control the music through the head unit and voice command.
And fourth, because I have no interest in owning a smart phone.

I'll wait, but really considering keeping the CX-5 shorter than most cars I have owned.
I found myself looking at the Rav4 the past few days because of this issue and decided screw it, I ordered a Kenwood head unit from Crutchfield. I don't have the tech package, so the only thing I need to figure out is how to make the backup camera work. I'm pretty sure that I have that figured out but won't know until I try it. Either way, I would MUCH rather not have a backup camera than deal with this iPod issue any longer.

With my luck they will release the fix as soon as I get the Kenwood installed. Even so, at that point I may decide I prefer the Kenwood anyway, it is pretty awesome, and if not it is very easy to reverse the process and sell the Kenwood on eBay. In the meantime I won't be dealing with the iPod issue. :)

I wouldn't recommend fitting the Mazda back up camera IMO the lens is to wide an angle, everything is smaller in the view as a result, my previous car a Xtrail had a much better view, not as wide an angle but still gave a good rear view.

I can live with it, but along with the satnav its not as good as my old 2009 car.

Its a shame as I find the car brilliant to drive, and its a great tow car, more than enough power in 175 diesel form.

hmmm...I don't find the CX-5 back up camera bad at all. I particularly like the way they did the lines. Besides, I don't really want to spend $200 for a camera and run the wires when one is already there.

All the back up cameras have the guidelines, the Mazda camera isn't bad, its just not as good as the Nissan one.

I surprised the camera is fitted if its not standard, or is it?

I meant the way they did the lines, not the fact that it has lines. They seem more accurate than previous cameras I have used.

I also want it to be as easy as possible to revert to stock should I decide to do so. I did look into aftermarket cams, but the price seemed prohibitive to me if making the stock one work is an option. I may end up with aftermarket though if I can't get it to work.

Backup camera on the CX-5 is great, surprisingly bright. Drove a 2013 Camry, and that camera was 100% useless unless full bright sun outside. At night, you couldn't see a thing. I like the one in the CX-5

This was all a rush job to get the cars out to the dealers; they did not even have the supplies to install both horns in the cars, so they sent them out with one horn, even though the bracket and the bolt are present for the second horn, common Mazda who you fooling?

Is that why the horn sounds like it is missing half its tone? Is that the same in the 2013? Wonder how easy it would be to add it in now?

Its been done. Check the How To section, someone wrote it up when they did it.

I'm connecting perfectly to my iPhone 5 with bluetooth (even plays the last audio app that was played - picks up Downcast and Pandora directly) - however for some reason I can't get shuffle to work reliably. Seems like if I have the radio on, and the iPhone has started to play a song and has been stopped, and then the shuffle button is hit on the phone, and then I switch to the bluetooth pickup the stereo will shuffle. But I can't change to shuffle on the phone while it's already playing. And sometimes it doesn't even work anyway.

Also the Shuffle button the CX-5 screen is not available.

wtf?

edit: this sometimes works for me:

Re: iphone 5 will not shuffle on bluetooth

After searcing other message boards looking for a possible answer I was able to find a work-around to the shuffle problem with the iPhone/CX 5 combination.

In order to "reengage" the shuffle you need to switch to another option on the radio head (FM, AM, etc). Then manually press play on your iPhone, then press the shuffle option. Once you've started the music on your iPhone you can then switch back to bluetooth on the radio head.

If you're doing this when starting your car, be sure that your iPhone bluetooth connection has completed before starting this process. I've noticed that the shuffle will "disengage" again if you switch to any of the other options (FM, AM, CD, etc), this also includes if you get a phone call. If this happens you have to perform the above process again.

The system can be a little wonky sometimes and doesn't always take. On occassion it's taken me a few attempts but it works.

I hope this helps you all until an actual fix is found.

side note: I hate it when people honk. I never, ever use my horn. and I live in Chicago, lol.

I also noticed the USB resume play doesn't work for me either. Pretty lame if you ask me! 30 dollar mp3 players have this and not our 600 dollar Head units. This is a big disappointment in an other wise "so far" great vehicle. I hope mazda repairs this. Especially knowing that the 2013 models don't have this issue.

My dealer told me the early models were running the batteries down, especially while stood in the showrooms.

Hence the mod.

Folks, I also posted this USB playback issue on Carcomplaints.com. The more we complain the better chance Mr. Mazda will listen!

Looks like they are just emailing canned answers! Very disappointing!

Thank you for taking the time to contact Mazda about the USB port media playback on your 2014 Mazda CX-5.

With a media device connected to the USB port, your music playlist will start from the beginning each time the vehicle is started. This is a normal function of the vehicle infotainment system in reading your digital playback device.

Mazda values the opinion of our customers and continually researches ways to enhance vehicle features. We have documented your request for the infotainment system to memorize playback position. Should you like to discuss further, please do not hesitate to contact me, referencing file number 149343620.

Thank you again for providing this valuable insight regarding the Mazda CX-5.

this is normal function? that's crap.

'Normal' does not equal 'desired'.

They are being careful with their words as to not put themselves in a bad spot. This is standard operating procedure for any product release, including software, hardware, etc. There are issues or functions that don't work ideally at the time of release, but they run out of time to fix it, so they have to accept that as "standard behavior" when the item ships. Then, a consumer buys the product and isn't happy with the behavior. But, its not like it originally was working when you bought it and then it stopped working.. its working the way they chose to have it work when they manufactured it.

If they openly admitted it as defective, they would then be obligated to fix it under warranty, which clearly they don't want to do. While certainly I don't like it, I can be realistic about the situation. While it is an annoyance, it seems to me that so many people have unrealistic expectations about how severe of a problem this is and how they think Mazda should respond.

I was agreeing with your post up until this part. Severity is in the eye of the beholder. The (mal)functioning of my head unit bothered me so much that I was seriously considering trading in my 4 month old CX-5. Luckily I realized there was a simpler and smarter decicion (for me), and replaced the head unit. I can truly say that this has increased my enjoyment of the car greatly and has indeed made me fall back in love with a car that I was starting to look at as a lemon simply due to this one major (again, in the eyes of this beholder) issue.

this is a severe issue, especially since it appears the 2013 models do not have this problem. So what changed? I also can't shuffle my iPhone.
