The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Gonna be a boring day at work today. Currently on one side of the wall, we have 2 engineers (including myself) and on the other side of the wall, just Jess. I think the headphones will be in frequent use today.

I have the most boring job. engineering internship, and no one gives me s*** for work to do.... all i did yesterday was take a 2 hour lunch, put dimensions on a part, and scan a bunch of head gaskets. wtf

same here. Intern in an investment department. They don't want to let me be responsible for the numbers they are sending out. So I get to sit here and look at what I want to buy next for the car

and they told me to stop browsing the internet so much. if youre not gonna give me work dont expect me to sit here and make some for myself. i already made and filled out my time cards through the end of my work time here hahaha

We had an intern last year. It was a complete waste of time and money. He would come in, check twitter all day, play on his phone, etc. I could understand if we didn't give him work to do, but I was dumping all sorts of important, but not high priority work on him so that I could focus on a big deliverable I was working on. Something that should hvae taken 2 hours took him 2 days for the reasons stated above. Give me someone who wants to learn and work!

I think you just found a new intern my man lol. Not me ajkulish. When I get stuff to do I knock it out fast and make sure its right the first time because I don't want anyone to say I'm not a productive worker. But they keep giving me raises so I must be doing something right, and I've been here for 3 years. Just not old enough and not done with my degree so they can't hire me

we have an intern right now, he's in our survey department. They make good use of him too, making him carry all the lathe and hubs and pound them into the pavement subbase

I wish my department had an intern. I don't care how lazy they are, I would just direct everyone that comes to me asking for stuff to them so they can act as a screen so I get work done.

What sucks sometimes for what we do is that we could go balls to the wall on something, getting it ready, and someone will conveniently forget an entire page of comments. Sometimes it doesn't really affect me at all, but I'm sure Jess is getting sick of it. Hahaha.

i love getting work to do. and i love learning here, but they give me a single assignment a day pretty much and i rock it out in like an hour then, bam, bored as s*** again. i ask my manager for something to do probably 3 times a day

I'm sorry, but this pisses me off. I'm sure the company is not paying you to just sit around and browse the Internet, they have provided you with an opportunity to see what it is like to work in the engineering field, ideally so you can figure out if you like it or not while you provide a service for them. What are the problems?

- You need to take more initiative, if they don't give you work then either ask for it, look for it, analyze current or previous work or just shadow someone that works there full time so you can see what they have to deal with on a daily basis. Besides money, you should be there to learn and figure out what to do with your life.

- If they're not giving you anything to do for whatever reason, then you are working for another dumbass manager. Unfortunately, you fill find those in a lot of places, and from my experience you should make it known so changes can take place or just look for another company. That just gives me the impression that the quality of work from that company is really bad so as an Engineer, I would stay way. This is why I was 'let go' of my previous job, I told management how bad of a job other people were doing, and they didn't like it. I have high standards and I take pride in my work, so I don't like stupid people getting in my way and making me look bad.

Its really sad to see people bitching about the opportunities they have and not taking advantage of them. There are plenty of people who would love to be in your shoes, not because they want to buy parts for their car but because they need to provide for their families.

I have a degree in Electrical Engineering, so pretty much I know how to do what Phen does. I could be making as much or more than he does (I'm older) and have a much better financial stability. Why don't I do it? Because I don't like it. How did I figure that out? With an internship, asking questions, shadowing people, figuring things out on my own.

/end rant

I always feel weird asking the guys around here for stuff to do constantly. feel like I'm bothering them. One of the guys keeps me pretty entertained though

I figured out that I don't like being the "investor" side through my internship. My boss is just waiting till I actually have a degree to get me a big boy job. My job right now is to get good grades and learn the basics here. I want to work at a Mezzanine firm or a hedge fund. Thats my dream job, hell even an investment banker. I like talking to people and getting out. I hate reading research and doing the same reports month in and month out.

You should ask if you could get a few days in the field. See how what the ink on the paper translates to in the field. That is by far the best experience booster you can get in my opinion.

^ truth. Nothing beats real world experience IMO when it comes to learning

Edit:
I couldnt find a paid internship in corporate finance that would allow me to work another job to continue paying for school...so i worked with my job and the university to make my own internship. My job is marketing and sales, but every quarter they have me do a project that relates to finance and it counts as 3 credit hours.

The only thing that worries me, is that when i graduate, ill be 27 and competing against a bunch of 22 year olds that are fresh out of school and have had internships at financial institutions. This is when i hope that having management experience since i was 19 will help me out. Time will tell...

And at my company, that's where the real money is. Most people do the field thing for a few years, then come into the office and provide very valuable information based off of experience. Some of them actually like living out of a suitcase and stay in the field.

for sure. And I've learned a lot here. But its hard to pay attention when its just not stuff I'm interested in. So i hot every meeting when someone from a Mezz fund or something along those lines comes in because that's what I like and my boss knows that. We have talked about it on multiple occasions. I just don't want to quit because 1) it looks amazing to have 3+ years of experience 2) I can't beat the money and the hours they give me for not having a degree and being 20 in school 3) I like the environment where I work, never work weekends and I'm off by 4:30 everyday.

All I got from this is that you are old and should be a baller like Phenda-bear. :D
I agree though. I ****** off a lot when I was an intern and at the start didn't have anyone to whip me onto the right track. Later I had one of the dudes there become my unofficial mentor and he showed me the ropes.
From one side I can sympathize these guys as I was in their shoes, but as Pablo said - look for work. Bug people. Go to other departments. Take free online courses. Make use of your time.
It gets boring, tedious, annoying, etc. Take a 10 minute break, walk out, have a coffee, and get back to it. I wish I was smarter back in the day and learned more. blah.
On the other hand - I ****** hate interns. The ones my company hires are snotty little s**** that think they are better than anyone else. I give them the 'mad russian' look and they don't f*ck with me, but damn I just wish I could beat that smirk off their faces. Oh your mommy and daddy paid for your school and now you are getting paid to f*ck off on my company's dime?! F*CK YOU!

/rant. :)

I think its the guys that have real jobs and have a lot of work to do getting pissed that the kids that have opportunities are complaining about having nothing to do.
