2012 Mazda5 Sport 6M
Alright, so got this done, finally! Installed a Kendwood KDCBT952HD deck in my 2012 Mazda5 Sport. Comes with rear USB port and bluetooth mic. Also replaced factory components in doors with Polk DX 5-1/4" components and rear hatch speakers with Polk DX 5x7s. Stereo sound is awesome! Right now I'm just cleaning up the install of the USB port to replace stock Aux In and the steering wheel control wiring.

Phase 2 will be a flip down DVD player/monitor, a subwoofer and maybe another set of speakers.

Polk DX 5-1/4"..... Where did you put the crossovers?? Also, looks like the tweeter fit like a glove or did you have to do some filing down?? Thanks.

I put the crossover in the space under the armrest area. That was the only reasonable spot. I made a little bracket out of a piece of sheet metal to hold it. The tweeters fit well with no filing using the Polk flush mount tweeter cup. I did wind up buying the flat sail panel with no factory tweeter instead of cutting up my stock ones, although the same mounting principle should apply.

Very nicely done and good choice on equipment but it looks kinda odd with the unused lower DIN -no pocket option? A nice double DIN would have filled it in better especially with all the black plastic around. You seem to be experienced with working on audio setup. What/Where do you plan on mounting the sub? Amp specs? Interested in hearing about the rest of your setup plans.

Yeah, the kit had a pocket option but I didn't install it. I'm planning on adding a set of eGauges (OBDII-style) later on, so i cut a piece of ABS and just made a smooth filler plate for now. The idea is to make a custom bezel for the gauges later on. Agree a nice double DIN would have fit nicely but my priority was clean sound not necessarily playing movies or navigation, which is what the double DINs tend to focus on. Plus, I needed detachable face for security, like when it gets parked on the street in Mexico. Most double DINs are not detachable and those that were had other issues. Although I will say the higher end Pioneers seem to be the best.

I have a 4 channel Alpine amp and a flat Pioneer sub I'm looking at fitting in the spare tire. I think they were both 250W RMS. The amp is a tight squeeze, but I think I was able to fit it behind the drivers side rear panel. My goal is to not use up any of the cubbys and keep the stock appearance.

Before I do that though, I got it in my head that I want to add a set of speakers on the sliding doors. I bought a set of 4" round Polk DXi coaxials and I'm playing with that. If that works, it may change my amp plans. Will keep you guys posted as I progress.

Yeah, I've thought about that, too. When you have passengers in the second row and cargo in the back (as is normal), they can't hear the music because the rear speakers are so far back and blocked by everything you have back there. I'm interested to see how this goes.

What's the brand of the dash kit you used and where did you buy it?

I got my Scosche dash kit from amazon for $29. The metra ones are cheaper but the scosche had both options for double and single DIN. Not to mention I have amazon prime and credits: https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)

I should be installing a new double-din deck with backup camera and steering wheel controls soon. I bought the Metra ASWC-1 for the wheel controls.

How does the new setup sound? I'm currently stock and the sound is terrible (no bass). However, the cheap OEM speakers cause a great deal of vibration with the door panels which makes things sound even worst.

Did you Dynamat or use anything similar? If not, how do you find the way your new setup sounds? Any rattles/vibration sounds? I want to install a nice set of speakers all around and a new head unit, but I'm worried that it will make the doors vibrate even worst and although entirely possible, I'm not enthusiastic about having to Dynamat the crap out of everything! I just want a cleaner, more accurate sound with a little more thump without every panel sounding like its vibrating loose!

The Scosche kit was pretty good quality, I just didn't like the styling. I got the Connects2 kit from eBay. It is a replica of the Euro dash bezel with the double-din option. It's more expensive but quality was top notch. It was designed for a double din though, so I had a little extra work to fit my single din.

The sound with the Kenwood deck and Polk speakers is a huge improvement over stock. My stock paper cones were starting to rattle and sound garbled when they were turned up. Clarity is amazing at high volume. I began Dynamating the floor, since it "sounds" like a lot of exterior noise comes up through it. Also prepping for the sub install. Otherwise, just foam tape and and a small square behind each speaker.

Also, I've been busy finishing the overhead dvd monitor. Just got done this weekend. Headliner removal was a bear!
