Tow Hook Front License Plate Holder

Hello all,

I just bought my CX-5 a couple weeks ago and I do not have a front license plate mount. I am not sure what the law is about displaying a front license plate in Texas, because I have heard that it is and isn't necessary.

Anyways, I was in the parking lot today and I saw a Mini Cooper with its license plates attached to the Tow Hook (similar to this):

I was wondering if anybody knows where I can get one for the CX-5. It doesn't seem like they are many universal ones because many of the websites I go to have specific ones for different car manufactures (http://rhoplate.com/Products.html) There are some universal ones but I'm afraid that if I buy it and put it on, it may be too far from the bumper.

I don't want to drill any holes into the front of my baby! I also looked at the retractable front license plate mounts as well ;)

Most are model specific, like you noted. If you want one made, you'll have to step up to a vendor or aftermarket part manufacturer, promote the community, and prove that there is a profitable market for a tow hook plate holder.

Or, find a way to make your own.

Oh, and by the way, a forward plate is necessary in Texas, if you don't want to be harassed by police (and particularly DPS). I know from experience. ;)

Bought ours out of state, and couldn't see drilling holes in the new bumper either. I used the Rho plate for the 2012 Mazda 3. The one from corksport wont work, but with the Rho plate multi mount options it works fine.

I would contact rhoplate since they may have one on the drawing board for the CX-5.

Do you think you can post a pic? from the front and side? Would be much appreciated.

A lot of Porsche owners are using something similar in CA. Last few years enforcement/checking for front plates has increased, so I have been leaving them on in last 2-3 years.

(Although I don't have any front or rear plates on my CX-5, the 2 holes are already in bumper for front plate).

You know, I hate front plates as much as the next guy and in almost 50 years of driving (in Calif), I have never used one even though it's required by law. What I don't understand here is you guys are going to all this trouble to avoid using the central mounting point Mazda designed in for this car and your're still gonna end up with an ugly ol' piece of tin hanging off the front end. It'll just be in another position! If you must use a front plate in your state forfear of legal reprisal, why not just bite the bullet and drill the little holes in the bumber facia. The plate will cover them and, should you did ever want to abandon them, you can do like I did when I discovered my dealer had already installed the frame (with his advertising insert) on the car before delivery. When I got home I took it off, got a couple of tiny little vinyl plugs from the hardware store, painted them body color with the touchup paint I got from the dealer and pushed them into the holes. Presto! Problem solved; you can hardly even see them.

Bumper plugs.com sells nicely finished factory-matched color plugs for the bumper holes, most Porsche owners use them in CA.

The tow hook thing is mainly to use for displaying front plate only when needed (like when getting a fix-it ticket signed off by a random cop, or parking in a airport garage with cameras, etc.).

In CA with the recent sharp increase in front plate enforcement, I've reverted to using front plates after decades of running without. Lately a missing front plate is just another excuse to pull cars over and I can't be bothered (even though I have a cop in family that will gladly sign-off my fix it tickets for tint and plates). What's funny is that I've been running with no plates at all on the CX-5 for 11 months, no problem. No plates on a new-looking vehicle attracts less attention than a missing front plate today.

Fortunately today many newer cars have better-mounting locations for front plates that don't look so ugly, CX-5 included.
