This was $800.00 cash for one and I brought a second motor to do at the same time, for $200.00 more.

I brought all parts, the cost for two motors was One Grand Cash.

Yeah, that's what I was expecting for what I wanted. I have a majority of the parts on hand and was expecting about a grand for all the machine work. I'll have to see if I can find another shop or talk to them again.

edit: by the way, I have MP5T.com on my favorites tab. When are you going to finish up some of those how-to's? Mainly the head rebuild since that's the only one I'm not comfortable with.

yeah, get the individual costs per service...most likely those on their own will be significantly higher than having them do all of them at once...as most shops will reduce the price of individual services when you need all of them...

I have a friend that had a lot of engine work done on a SE-R spec V a few years ago...somewhere near Hagerstown, not sure how far that is from you...but i could get the info if you need it...I just remember it was a 4 cylinder specific shop, specializing in Japanese engines...He had tons done to the block and head, and it was under $1500...but included them sourcing all parts...which i'd imagine could cut the price down considerably if you have your own parts...

That would be great if you could get me that info, the place that I'm talking about is in Frederick, MD which is about 15 miles south of Hagerstown. I currently live about 2 1/2 hours from there. I don't mind spending more to do the job right the first time but man that was a hit when he said almost $1500.

I didn't get individual prices for each service, I gave him a a list of things that I wanted to get done and those were the estimates that I got. I probably should get set prices for each service though, it would've been easier to see if it was comparable to other shops. The price does inlcude cleaning, disassembley, testing and inspection prior to any serivce to see if the engine is usable.

I went to a speed shop that had all their services on a price list. They could combine services to bring down the estimate. Cleaning, disassembly, micro-crack check were all separate services.
I think I put the price list into a Haynes manual which I've packed away. Sorry I can't give you prices.
The guy gave me a quick tour of their machine shop. It was dirty everywhere but they had all machines needed to build a race engine. Mainly V-8s in various stages of rework. $1000 sounds a bit high for all ther services you've listed. If I remember, overbore is the most expensive service on your list. What was his estimate without the overbore? You might not need it.

@rit: I'll have to get a quote for each service, like I said this was a quote for all the work together. Probably would've been smarter to ask for each price seperately and when I had more time. Went to the shop, had a walk through and was only able to talk to him for about 10 min. (My fault, not his)

I had my cylinder head services at Tyson's machine in sterling va.
He charged me $160 to clean head, mill the head surface, grind the valves and seats. But I took everything to him apart and I assembled the head after words.
He's super experience, he does the machine work for most of the shops around here.

This sort of thing is really not an "On The Book" thing.

It's not like Mcdonalds that if you want a Hamburger it is 0.99 and if you want two it's 1.98...

It's more like you tell them what you want... and they tell you what they want to do it..

It has to do with how much other work is in the shop and when you expect them to have it done.


Personally, I brought in two motors in the winter and I said I wanted them before the spring. The price was really good because they could fit them in.

If yo say I need it in one week, they have to stop or push other jobs.. That costs you money.

Trust me I understand that and that's why I'm trying to get it done before race season is here. But what I'm expecting is a price range for each service, the issue I seem to be having is that I'm new to this area and I've been unable to find shops that either advertise or that are with in a reasonable distance from me. If I have to drive close to three hours then I might as well take the engine to Dino at speedcircuit seeing that he's less than 4 hours away. And the way it looks, I think that might be my best bet.

It would be a long drive for you but give Tyson's machine a call. Simon is his name. He will tell you on the spot if he can do what you are looking for and how much he will charge. He's never charged me a penny more then what he's initially told me. Hes also gave me a lot of advise every time I visit. But he doesn't advertise he doesn't need to most mechanics around here know him.

I had my cylinder head done in October. But I didnt do the build till last month. So far engine has been running great. It generally takes him about a week to have things ready, hes very meticulous.

Oh sorry man, I totally forgot to post...That shop closed...and he actually had the work done as they were selling off equipment, and got a great deal as it was off the books i guess...

Wish i had better news, but i'm sure you'll find something with some more digging.
