Are there 2 A/C Indicators with Auto Temp Control?

I've had my CX-5 a little over a month now and am still trying to figure out how AC works with Auto Temp Control. Every time I press Auto, the A/C LED and the A/C indicator in the LCD screen comes on (regardless of outside temperature). Then if I press the A/C button they both go off. And if I press it again, they both come on. I would have expected the button LED to mean that A/C is enabled and the LCD indicator to show whether the compressor is running. Again, this happens even if it is really cold outside. I read in the manual that the A/C will sometimes come on for defrosting when it is cold, but it seems to do this all the time. Does anyone know if this is how it is supposed to work?

The button led and lcd indicator both mean that the A/C is enabled. I've dealt with many auto systems from many other brands and the all had the same behavior.

Thanks. It would make more sense if one indicator showed when the A/C compressor was engaged, but I guess that would confuse most people.
