I'm in Winnipeg. Where it gets to sub sub sub zero.
No drama for our mamas, cool. Winnipeg sounds sounds a lot colder than coastal BC for sure.
Don't worry about MikeM the guy gets incredibly angry if you don't think like him.

I didn't think so because I rarely get angry. I'm not sure why you would make this up about me.
He thinks that if he doesn't have issues no one should and if you do you are not intelligent! (braindead and don't ever tell him fuelly is not 100% accurate, if you do you are apparently a caveman who never seen a car in his life.
Actually, Fuelly is 100% accurate (but the data you provide it with may not be). In any case, if you track every fill up any minor under/over fills average out and the end result is as accurate as your cars odometer.

happened this morning in Louisiana for bout a second, 40 degrees
I've had my 3rd incident in just over 10K miles recently, my next oil change is serveral months from now so I will wait. So far we've had only one poster actually have the dealer do some kind of reflash/update.
I'm waiting too till either its more frequent or there is a proven solution dealers are doing.
Side thought, does anyone think it could be the fuel pump? Mine has only done it after sitting for a while, never after stopping recently.
UPDATE: I took my car into the dealer to make them aware of the problem (even provided them with all of your responses since you folks put it into words a little better than I can). They ran a diagnostics check and came up with nothing. It's been getting much colder here lately, however I haven't experienced the issue. If/when it happens again I will take it in. I mentioned the reflash to them and they didn't really acknowledge it.
So, not much of an update, but it seems to be more rare of an incident for me than others.

Most posters seem to report it as being rare and/or infrequent, and not just in bitter cold temps.
Since it's relatively rare and not dangerous, I'm planning to give Mazda more time....

I'm confused. Is the problem just that the engine idles down to the point it seems like it's going to die for a brief moment before it idles back to the normal cold start high idle? Does this problem cause driveability issues or any inconvenience or is it simply that it doesn't inspire confidence??

I started the car, and the RPM was not steady (jumping back and forth between 2000-4000) and the engine sounded really weird.
I quickly turned it off and when i started it again it was fine

Immediately when you start the car it may act like the engine is going to die. Then it will regain itself and be normal for the remainder of the trip. It happens so rare, but is very concerning when it happens. It really does make it seem like it will stutter and die, and then all is good.
CX-SV - thanks, likewise...I'm going to give Mazda some time. It doesn't seem like a huge issue so far for me. That said, I know there are a couple folks on here who experience the problem a little more often; luckily they've gotten the "re-flash". Overall it doesn't seem to be a deal breaker at all.

I'm no mechanic, but this is certainly something to bring to Mazda's attention. I'm sure Mazda will spread the news throughout their dealers quickly.

I own the 2013 Mazda CX-5 -- less than 9,000 miles! Cranked it Sunday morning and felt like the car would blow apart!! Waited few minutes for it to calm down, drove it about two miles and it went totally crazy when accelerating from a stop light. Car would not shift out of 1st gear and the TCS and several other lights came on. Took to dealership and found out the Transmission Valve Body must be replaced. Is this ridiculous or what?
Mine did the violent start again today when leaving work. I called the dealer and he said they could flash the ecu. He said there is a newer version out but mazda didnt tell them what it fixes. My schedule is busy so ill have to figure a time to go in. My ride home is an hour long and it drove as usual.
I got a better listen to it this time and it sounded like metal grinding almost like there was no oil around the pistons.

Well it happened to me again this morning. Kind of violent, but I let it continue. After the normal 5 seconds it goes back to normal. I hooked up my tablet and checked for codes. Nothing. Then I used my data program to monitor the ecm and sensors. Nothing out of the norm. Btw. Temp inside my garage at time was 10 celcius. I don't believe its a cold weather thing. Now I question if I push the start button hard enough. Like my car is saying. Did he start it or is it me. Decisions, decisions. But that can't be it. Might be injector.
Stalled on me today during startup. CRAP!! Coldest day so far this year, only -15C outside though and it was -3C in the garage. Started it and it went up to 2k rpm but didn't sound quite right, then it loped and died. Restarted fine and kept running.

I'm not quite sure what a lack of oil sound is. lol But the oil level is fine but obviously all in the bottom of the pan at cold start up.
It didn't rev up quite as high as it normally does then the idle dropped like it does when acting up, it tried to recover but died out. It really sounds like if I were to give it a bit of gas it would have kept running.
