So its about time to replace my stock Tokico HPs and am looking for some struts. I use my MSP as a daily driver, I dont race, I dont track. I dont feel like spending 400 on the Tokicos. That was the most reasonable I saw for all 4 front and rear. The only other brand besides Monroe, and KYB was Stagg SHS struts. They are like 159 plus shipping for all 4. I did some googleing on them and most people say that they are like the Tokico HP Blues, valved the same and whatnot. Any ideas?

stock struts are not tokico HP's, even though the "Look" like they are. the stock MSP struts are valved different, and the rear spring perch is located at a slightly different height.

why do you think you need to replace them? the stock struts are built pretty well. if the car is not wallowing on the highway, and there is no visual signs that they are blown, chances are good they do not need to be replaced.

They say tokico on them. I had a high clunk that sounded like a strut mount blown out. So while I was doing the mount id do the struts. The perch is the same as the stock protege. The body isnt any different from any other Protege. I changed the mounts in the back, still have the same sound. I have new links on the rear, as well as greaseable bar bushings. Everything is still tight. Still got the knock on the right rear side.

I used stock protege strut mounts. The struts arnt OEM mazda struts with Tokico stamped in it.

That's like saying the springs are actually racing beat...

The strut mount is not the perch, 2 completely different things

I have the same suspension on my mp3 except for the oddball perch, I have the original struts up front 165k and 11 years they're still good and god only knows what this poor car has been through. I have Monroe's in the rear they're garbage the box they come in is more valuable.

Since I didnt have a clunk, and then it happened, and its still here, id say its nothing to do with the mounts. That kid uses some bad language for a forum. LOL. I will figure out the clunk someday, its only over huge bumps so it doesnt bother me.

The pearch is where the spring sits on the strut. I dont think its any different from a stocker.

I'll bet your car against mine. Do a search of the forum if you think every other member here is wrong then put a strut from a regular protege on your car and see what happens. There's a reason why the msp guys have to use different springs than the regular sedan people. P5 rear springs are also different

If you have a clunk it is probably end links, I have never heard a strut on a protege make a clunk. The wither blow or get bouncy

End links are tight, checked them when I had the strut out for the mounts. I figure a P5 would have a different spring due to more weight back there. I didnt think Mazda/Callaway would get that silly with strut perches between the MSP and the stocker. If you are sure then you are right.

Yea it does, if they move they are bad. Im a ASE Master Mechanic. I think I know when a sway bar link is lose or bad.

Then explain to me why mine is tight but still clunks.

Exactly why I won't let mechanics touch my car, they think they know everything. But since you know everything about these cars go ahead and do what you want and waste money.

nice.

ask for help, and when we tell you what the issues are, you throw out that you are a master mechanic? if you know what the issue is, why come and ask for help?

I asked what struts to use. Then it went to this, I have no idea why. It never hurts to ask.

Keep the blues or deal with rubbing just make sure it's for the msp and not the regular protege
