Any One Paint Over the Chrome on Thier 99-00 Grilles?

:
2000 Protege ES
I'd like to try a different look for my front end on my '00, and am thinking of painting over the chrome on my grille. Have any of you guys done this, and could you kindly share any tips? I'll probably need to use a spray can, as the grille is quite a pain to remove (found this out when I had my super tones installed). I'm also not completely sure if the process is as simple as taping over and spraying, or if the chrome will need to be prepped in order for the paint to adhere. Thanks!

I'm going to be doing it in a week or so, i will let you know, im going to be painting mine black. but i've seen alot of other people have, but i guess none of them want to post in here

thanks! unless i find an aftermarket grille that'll fit our cars, i plan on painting mine black as well. please let me know how your project goes, and photos would be great too! i love how nice the painted-over chrome looks on IukekiniProtege's car!

I painted mine for the evil M look. Just masked off what I didn't want painted with tape and news paper and used gloss black spray paint. Turned out pretty well.

Actually I just realized the year you're talking about, my buddy had a '99 and did the same thing though.

did he do anything to prep the chrome before painting over it? i'm afraid that the paint may not adhere properly of i don't at least sand some of the chrome off, but am not shure how difficult that may be to do....

hm, i'm not positive. but for mine all i did was spray black semi-gloss over the chrome and went over with some clear. it's been a couple months, driven on salt covered roads and it's still holding up pretty well.

^ I was just about to suggest vinyl as well. For a simple part like this it'd be the second most cost effective solution (after spray bomb) and probably the best looking.
