The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Don't feel too bad about that mani cracking. They all do it eventually. Sucks for sure.

The 2 bolts on the far left (cyl 1) were broken when I changed mine. No cracks in my mani though

So now I'm wondering if they are broke off in there or just missing. Mine is cracked on cyl 2 and starting to on 4. I really don't want to drill out and tap a new hole in the head if I don't have to.

Usually a hole in the block is a big deal...

most likely it looks something like this, don't have to be a genius to know you need a new engine...

I didn't have to drill them out, just some pb blaster then vice grips.

speed6 project would be cool...

lol, I like the "not sure I believe them" I take it he didn't want to try a independent shop

Since when is a hole in the block a big deal to the DIY'ers on this forum? $6000 for a LOW mileage Speed6, $3000-$5000 for a motor (IF that...seems a bit high to me, but I get better prices than yous guys) and you have an amazing car, that usually goes for $17,000-$20,000, for $10,000 or less! And you guys have boners for dude's Miata because it's such a "good deal". lol

Seems like a no brainer to me, for someone in the market for one. I passed the info to my neighbor, he said it was "tempting" haha I almost feel like asking my buddy for some more money so I can flip this!

I may be wrong but, couldn't a person just get a regular MZ3 engine and swap all the turbo shizzle over and be done with it? Seems easy enough and not overly expensive. Do it Josh, flip that biotch.

I'm not sure what the deal is with the engines. I'll have to do some research tonight.

The average person doesn't respond too well when you tell them the car has had the motor replaced though, so selling might take longer than usual. The buyer would have to be a true MS6, or Mazda in general, enthusiast, who appreciates the deal they're getting. I don't think it would command top dollar like other, original cars, but I think it'd bring in $13,000-$15,000.

If I had the money, space and time I would consider it

I don't believe they are the same engine, but If it was to keep I'd put a built motor in. Hey josh, how about taking all the necessary parts off to do a speed6 wagon?

You miss the point tho. Most of the people here that do a lot of work on stuff know Proteges, not 6's. There are what... maybe 4 people here that own, or have owned a 6 and modded them?

Eh... not really. MS6's have the direct injection DISI motor and the regular 2.3's out of the 3 don't. When it comes down to it, the only things that are really the same are the blocks.

BUT... people have been known to make more power out of the regular 2.3 with a turbo since they're not limited by injector sizes. Of course, the ECU won't work right, so that's another headache in and of itself.

If I had the money to do it, I would... and keep it. I've wanted an MS6 since I first drove one at Kent Mazda in 06.

I get that. I didn't expect anyone in this crew to jump on that....just making conversation.

Wes made it seem like OMGHOLEINBLOCKKILLITWITHFIRERUNAWAY, when I think it's a steal!

Nope, they only share the blocks. To swap in a NA 3 motor you'd have to replace ecu and everything. I've seen a few blocks floating around for $2-3k. My biggest question is how much other internal damage was done to the engine. You'd wanna figure on doing rods and pistons as well. It's a good deal of work but definitely doable if someone wanted to.

"I don't want her you can have her she's too fat for meeeee". Ya know that song? Meh. I think the P5 is on the larger side... But I think that's why us Protege guys work on Proteges, because they are old, cheap, we can find parts cheap. Shoot, a good motor for a Protege is like tree fitty.

I don't think the studs are broken, unless they are broke off in the block. You can actually look into the flange on the mani. I'll have to look at it when I get back home.

I took the bike to work last night to come out to it covered in frost. My black CBR looked white. Good Times! Everyone referred to me as being nuts, but I just told them I'm a bad ass :)

A little JB Weld and Bondo and that'll buff right out.

Yeah, they say they fixed a Caterpillar block with it on the back of the tube or something crazy! :D

I was laughing at that guy's reaction to not believing he needed a new motor. I don't think a motor swap would be a big deal to flip that, but my thinking is "if he drove it hard enough (or stupid enough) to throw a rod, what else is wrong with the car?" I've had a lot of first hand experience with terrible cars that my friend has bought. It's one thing when he buys them for 500$ and something happens. It's another when you've got more than 6k wrapped into it, at least to someone in most of our financial situations, I would assume. Bigger risk, bigger potential for pay off, though...

Exactly
