Do these Mazdaspeed Protege transaxles with LSD's need a friction modifier if I'm using Redline MT-90?

I used 1qt. of Lucas and 2qts. of Mobil 1 75-90 when I flushed my fluid, never heard of friction modifier being necessary.

For MT-90? No
Do you need modifier period? Yes.
Technically, all GL-5 gear oils have some amount of modifier which is enough for the LSD in the MSP. The only time you need to add some is if you intentionally go out and find some GL-4-- which is pretty non-existiant in retail store enviroments anymore.

so if using Redline MT-90 you dont, and Royal Purple you wont need it as well?

maybe it would be a good thing to post up known brand names that are ok to use

It might have to do with the type of LSD system it is. The MSP's are gear driven and I believe there is a fluid driven design, which needs a modifier.

Yup, if it's gear driven you do not need modifier. The stock photos I eyeballed on protege garage and various other sites listed a clutch driven LSD. Learn something every day I suppose.

Use Any GL-5 Fluid.

to straighten out some facts here:

Redline MT-90 is GL-4

Royal Purple MaxGear 75w-90 is GL-4/5

watch what gl-5 fluids you use because the high sulphur content will eat away at brass syncro's (not sure if ours are brass, still trying to confirm that) Royal Purple MaxGear is a gl-5 compliant that will not eat syncros

edit: adding friction modifier will not harm anything but it's not required.

Just had the trans apart and the syncros do certainly appear to be brass.

i thought they were...thanks. guys make sure you use the proper fluid in our gearbox. most GL-5 fluids WILL eat away our syncro's. I would use the following:

Redline MT-90 (GL-4 fluid)

or

Royal Purple MaxGear 75w-90 (GL-4/5 Fluid but is safe for brass syncro's) <------this is what i used after my initial break in for my mfactory and I like it. can't go wrong with either one though.
