What have you done to your Miata today?

Here's another little clip.

Here's what it says on the rear of the cover.

And here it is on.

Nice and clean.

These are nice too.

But look at the weight!

Some might call me a fool but I bought this car without even driving it. The guy I bought it from has owned it the past 6 years and is a local radio personality. His daily driver is a Range Rover. He sold the Miata to make room for a Porsche. Rough life.

Quick poll: am I nuts for buying without driving it first? Normally I test drive everything but in this case we have a ton of salt on the roads. I will put it on the road in April.

Ha totally threw me by commenting on your own post. Good point about the weight, with Miatas you definitely want to keep it around the stock wheel weight it at all possible.

As long as you checked the car over really well using the guide in the garage section at M.net you should be fine. If they have maintenance records that would be a big plus. Make sure you go through the proper steps to winterize the car if you aren't going to be driving it at all.

Thanks. Ya I read about the effect unsprung weight has on the car. I wouldn't have bought such heavy wheels but I do have these if the ASA's really bother me from a handling perspective.

I did check the car over really well and know what's been done maintenance wise. The guy I bought it from seems really anal about his stuff (in a good way) and the one other owner before him, a respiratory therapist, was even more so. As far as winterization goes, the battery is on trickle charge, the tires are inflated to 50 psi. Not sure whether fuel stabilizer was added to the tank, but easily added if not. The front end mask was removed. I'll check out the garage section to see if anythings been missed.

Buying anything used always carries a degree of risk but this car seemed to be a safe bet. I don't plan to autocross with it, though that seems like a blast. This is my first Miata and my first convertible. I've been dreaming about these cars forever. Now I finally have one. Dream come true!

Prior to buying the Miata, I was a motorcycle enthusiast. 20 years of riding and no accidents... but I felt like I was playing Russian Roulette. I still have 3 kids living at home so a Miata seemed to be a great alternative addiction.

Actually, rotational weight has a greater effect on your car compared to unsprung weight. So lighter rims, lighter tires, flywheel, etc.... is better to have than carbon fiber parts to replace others.

To give you an idea, I have a set of 949 6ULs (15x9) rims with tires that weighs considerably less than just the rims you were posting. With a Miata you have to keep a fine balance of weight vs performance. Seriously.

Edit: Omg I know of set of rims that looks close to those ASA rims, but weigh a lot less...... Thinking and looking!

So, having never driven my Miata or ANY Miata for that matter (I'm a virgin) the excess rotational and unsprung weight is going to make the car handle and feel worse? Would a newb like me even notice? I am pretty particular so I probably would. But damn, those ASA's look sweet. Form over function I suppose.

If you hopped in the car and drove it with the bigger wheels on it, you probably wouldn't know the difference, especially since you don't have a reference point. If you want to see if you can tell the difference between them, drive with the bigger ones on then swap to the stockers. I am willing to bet you will feel it. Wheels tend to come down to personal preference but most folks with Miata go with 15" as the best overall size.

And I can't figure it out, where is NL?

You'd mostly feel it in the steering as a n00b. Going from 18in summers -> 16in winter setups on my MS3 I REALLY notice the difference, despite the 16s having winter tires.

I really like my 15in wheels (three sets) and I can tell the difference between 195 tires and 225 tires in terms of steering responsiveness and to a lesser extent braking feel.

I could only find 320F/275R for the rates which for less than an inch of a drop wouldn't be bad at all except the rear is a little too high compared to the front IMO.

You have H&R springs Phen?

I do. H&R Race. I do have some gap in the rear, but I don't mind it.

he does, haven't driven it much around town but it might be a little too stiff for a DD

Says the guy who had coilovers on his 3 for DD. ;)

Not at all. I bought my Protege5 without driving it. It was a good deal, and I really wanted it. I always loved those cars. I've put a lot of miles on it, and 5 years later is still chugging along (kinda). 173k miles on it now.

In underpowered cars, wheel weight can make a difference in acceleration, but after I was up to speed, I never noticed a difference. I had some boat anchors on my P5, and while it felt sluggish, I never noticed a change in MPG, and when I auto-x'd it, I never saw negative effects. Of course, I would be comparing crappy touring tires to RT-615's... so a s*** ton of grip with a heavy wheel will always win out on a light wheel and bad tires.

Don't mind me, I'm rambling. Haven't had my coffee yet.

the H&Rs might be OK, but the Megan Racing EZs might be better, sprigs rates are considerably higher BUT the damping adjustment would compensate

Hmm... I've never actually considered a Megan Racing part as being quality and worth considering. Of course that could be me and my experience with my Honda, and my friend's STi. We put Megan coilovers on his STi. They were garbage.

a lot of people on other forums seem to like them, they're the same price as the FM setup but springs rates are quite different and one is non adjustable... anybody here care to chime in?
