The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

got all my hair chopped off last night, took the msp around the block with out a hood. The power steering wants to fight me at low speed but above 15ish it seems fine.

Did you flush the power steering or open any lines? If so, did you bleed it?

I'm looking forward to the weekend. Friday BBQ with Tessas family, Saturday party at Chippys and Sunday watching you boys run at BeaveRun (if I have enough cash for gas).

If you don't have enough cash for gas, you can ride down there with me.

Also, I still have your helmet, is ok if I borrow it for Beaverun? I swear this will be the last time!! I'll have my own helmet before the next track day event LOL

Of course you may borrow my helmet. Hell, you're getting more use out of it than I have.

I might take you up on that offer for the ride to PA. I want to take my car just because I like driving. I'll see ya saturday and we can chat. Glad you got Victoria straightened out for Sunday.

Nate, you better get Audrey figured out for Saturday!!!

So I figured out what the noise coming from the driver rear wheel was. I finally figured out it was from the brakes because the noise would go away when I held pressure on the brake pedal. It was the brake caliper rattling around. The metal anti-rattle clip thingy that goes on the outside front of the caliper was somehow bent and barely tight at all. So I tried bending it back to make it tighter on the caliper, which was a b**** to do with only a pair of pliers.

SAME issue I'm having! I thought it was something with the ebrake, since the noise would go away once I would apply slight pressure on the handle, and the cable was the only thing that felt a little loose in that area, but I noticed it went away if I applied regular pedal pressure too.

Today feels like a day to do one of two things.

a) Play metal music at appropriate volume levels (on guitar)
b) Drink myself stupid.

Who knows... both could happen...

I did and completly forgot to bleed the system, even bought new power steering fluid cause I knew I would need to. She will be there! Just installed my new horns aswell.

any of you speed guys want/need an oil catch can?? might be getting rid on mine in the coming month or so and figured id offer it to you ohio guys before listing it up on the forums... its a red anodized simota catch can with blue hoses (what they sent me when i ordered it) wouldnt be expensive or hard to get black or red hoses instead of the blue ones...

shoot me a pm if any of you are interested

I might be interested in that, how big of a PITA is it to install?

cake... hardest issue is just deciding where you want to mount it... i mounted it in a place that might not work for the ms3 but without seeing under the hood i cant tell you for sure one way or the other

but once you mount it, its as simple as running the hose from motor outlet to occ then another hose from occ to intake and its done

Glad you got Victoria straightened out for Sunday.

GRRRRRRR!!! About 10 minutes after I read this, I got a CEL on my way back to work from Lunch HAHA. I stopped at AutoZone (luckily it's 30 seconds from the office) and got the code read:

P0401
EGR System Fault: The ECM has detected too little flow on the EGR system

1. Blocked passage on EGR system
2. Failed EGR valve
3. EGR solenoid fautly
4. Failed EGR pressure sensor where applicable
5. Failed EGR position sensor where applicable

I wonder if this has anything to do with the boost gauge not showing any boost on throttle? Could just be a broken gauge, but the timing seems weird...maybe just a coincidence.

Time for some research, but if anyone has suggestions, please let me know!! Thanks

well, flushed the power steering, took it around the block to check it out, that part went great, but it died as soon as I got to my driveway and the temp gauge is all the way up. Had to push it to park it in the street. Maybe she won't be ready...

I found this post, not sure how accurate it is:

I can't post the link because the site kills the URL lol

I just started pulling this code on and off over the past week and a half. Nothing too serious, but for the forum here is a blurb on the EGR valve and its purpose. But, the main thing is that the EGR will increase your intake air temps, but it will reduce your combustion temperatures (less air for combustion) and reduce the possibility of knock/detonation. Another article I was reading commented on how a lot of car manufacturers will actually shift your engine map to a lower power map when the EGR is blocked/removed because of the increased possibility of knock/detonation. I'm not certain if our MS6s do this, because I haven't been able to borrow a co-workers OBDII data logger yet.

So I wonder if the reason the boost gauge isn't showing anything over 1psi is because the engine map shifted to a lower power map? The car doesn't seem to be pulling as hard, but that could just be my imagination.

I might have to clean it out, but I might not have time before Sunday, unless I skip out on some events going on this weekend :(

Nate, did you bleed the coolant as well? I'm pretty sure we have self-bleeding coolant systems but you still need to fill the block with coolant and the radiator and resevoir. Then I think you just fire it up and let it idle with the rad cap off and the bubbles will work their way out. Maybe a new t-stat is in order? Are your fans hooked up?

Evan, at least for the Protege's, cleaning the EGR isn't too difficult and is usually a once a year affair. I'm sure yours won't be too difficult to clean either.

Never cleaned the EGR on my Protege. I got lucky. It's common to do on the Proteges, but I don't know about the 3's. At least it's supposedly easier to get to on the 3's. On the Protege, you can just replace it with the Canadian version. Much more robust, and a better piece. Requires less cleaning. Not sure about the options for the 3. Of course, the first time you clean one, you set yourself up for having to do it again and again and again because the cleaning chemical actually damage the valve... but that's a different story all together.

And yes, we have a self-bleeding system. Run no cap thru a couple fan cycles. That should do it. Squeeze the coolant hose lightly to work out any remaining bubbles.

sounds like the dirty egr. the new one goes for about $430 form the dealer so you woulsd be better off cleaning it.

Ya, from some research, it seems like there's a lot of people that have issues with this. I'm going to try cleaning it, but I don't think I have all the tools.

it's been 2 1/2 hours, how long should it take to cool down?
