2009 CX-7 Grand Touring
Hi,

I just bought a 2009 CX-7 Grand Touring with keyless ignition that came with two credit card sized smart keys. I have noticed that the 2010 CX-7 Grand Touring comes with a smart key fob remote that is a lot smaller and sleeker, any ideas if I can buy a 2010 remote and reprogram it to work with my 2009 CX-7?

I dont want this huge card thing hanging from my key ring...

Thanks in advance!

The purpose of the credit card sized key fob is to just put it in your wallet/purse and leave it. Use the little cap to turn the ignition switch. The Smart Key works off of a proximity sensor, To lock and unlock the doors, just push the little button on either front door or the rear hatch while standing within the proximity of that door with the key in your wallet/purse.

Its a convenience thing, you shouldn't ever have to physically touch the key.

Thanks for you response.

I realized that. I just dont like it in my wallet, it makes it bulkier. I'm also afraid it can crack in there...

I happen to like the key fobs that most other cars with keyless use... I was just wondering if its possible to reprogram a key fob instead...

I understand the bulkiness. I did have to reduce what I keep in my wallet. As for cracking it, don't worry, I've had mine in my wallet for nearly 2 years now. I am on my 2nd key, but I don't think it is related to being stored in the wallet as my wife's failed in the exact same way first.

As far as reprogramming it, I don't know if anyone is going to be able to answer that, short of some person in Japan who works for Mazda. It could be two different systems, similarly to why you can't program a key fob for a Nissan with an Infiniti. You might try finding on one ebay and giving it a whirl.

Regards,
