Im buying a 2004 3i, and it has the 6 disc changer--
just wondering if it will play dvd discs with mp3s on them

I don't think it will even play CD-R's with MP3's on them...But I'm not sure...I live in Canada and have a 6 disc changer in my speed and it plays burnt MP3 discs. But I hear the US version does not. Maybe someone else could chime in and verify?

Mazda 3's are the funnest vehicles EVER!!! Just before I bought my Mazdaspeed 3, I owned an 09 Mazda 3 GT Sport....I loved the s*** out of that car (it was my first Mazda)..But then I saw the Speed 3 sitting at the stealership 9 months later...and about 2 days later, it was mine...I LOVE IT!!! These cars are built to thrill, be practical, and are damn attractive too! Not to mention, the people on these forums are Extremely helpful with any, and all, problems you may have...There is almost always an answer for any problem you have

I think starting with the 2007's they played MP3 CDs. I have a 2008.5 and it plays them. You may be able to swap out the player for one that does, but I'm not 100% sure of compatibility. Have a read here for someone that did it on a 2006.

If you do swap it out, try buying a secondhand player from ebay or one of the bigger salvage companies. It will cost about $100 verse $400-500 at the dealer.

i might do that. the seller of the car gave me an fm transmitter for my ipod, and i was surprised to hear the quality. as soon as the car starts, i can hear the buzzing of the semi vacant fm setting, and then it dissapears to silence once the transmitter comes on, so i may stick with that for a while before i just install an ipod mod.

For years '04-05 there was a dealer accessory (read: didn't come with any models standard) single CD/Mp3 deck.

For years '06-'08 there was a dealer accessory (same as above) 6CD/Mp3

For '08.5+ all models play Mp3 CD's and number of discs is based off of the trim level

If you wanted to get one of the Mp3/CD players for your car you would only be able to get the single CD one for a '04/'05 model. In '06 the wiring harness for the LCD was separated from the HU vs. connected through the HU on the earlier models. Technically the player would work, however there would be no information on the LCD at all.

CD players can't play DVD's, but DVD player can play CD's. It's kind of like a square is also a rectangle, but a rectangle isn't a square.

If you're happy with the transmitter for now then that's cool. I highly recommend getting even a simple hardwired input like the grom audio or aux mod basic (the second are hard to come by) as they'll have far better and more consistent sound quality. Or you can go straight up to an ipod module for charging and control. The two most popular of those are the grom and audiolink.
