Unsatisfactory dealer install of ms cai

Long story short, I have a 2007 ms6 gt 75k b2b warranty with 10k miles currently and a dealer installed ms cai at 8k . Went to check the pre-filter/filter for cleaning and wtf!!! the filter isn't even clamped to the intake and it's laying next to the wheel well.

How long has it not been connected and wtf have i sucked into my engine?

I need advice on what I should ask/demand from the dealer to prevent future damage to my engine and prevent a voided warranty.

So, is there a clamp in there at all? Does it look like the filter wasn't clamped down enough or no clamp was used? The end of the tube should have a bead-roll on it, and even a loosely secured clamp should ensure the filter doesn't fall off. I'd bet that the installer slid the filter over the tube and never clamped it down at all.

As for damage to your engine, there is very little chance anything has happened if you haven't noticed anything. If you'd sucked in a rock or something solid, it would chuck your compressor and probably cause a noise you'd notice. I would insist that the dealer pull the turbo off and inspect the compressor for damage to the blades, but the chances are very slim anything is wrong.

I would want it well documented what has happened in writing. If you don't get exactly what you want out of the dealership in terms of being satisfied, I'd open a dialogue with the regional rep (or however Mazda does their heirarchy) and be sure there is a record other than in the dealership computers... even if you've got a copy in writing.

i would have them document it and thats about it, if they cant install an intake right i sure as hell dont want them taking my turbo apart to check for damage

nothing bad is going to happen by the filter not being on there, i was running an open turbo on my p5 for about 3 months and nothing got sucked in

You would think so, but I'm quite sure the MSCAI does not have a bead and AFAIK, none of the other brands do either. This loose filter isn't the most prevalent problem however. Shoving the filter so far up the pipe to close off the inlet is the problem.....

My understanding is that Mazdaspeed accessories have to be installed by the dealer to be covered under warranty, is this incorrect?

not necessarily
they just say that so they can make money of you for the install.
its not that hard to install, the more s*** you install the more you learn about ur car.

+1 - I installed my MSCAI and learned a great deal about my car. It only took me about an hour to an hour and half to get it in too. The hardest part was trying to get my hands/tools to the bolts that hold the lower section of the stock airbox in.

Sorry to hear that dude. I have a MS CAI too and feared the same thing and decided to put it on myself. All you really need is a good jack and some wrenches along with some vaseline to help aid in the clamping of the filter. You should demand the dealer check the turbo.

def have the dealer check your turbo. when you boost, there's a massive amount of suction, and you could have easily have damaged the compressor wheel by sucking something up. i kno won my turbonetics on my fe3, when i didnt have a filter on it for basic tuning, even at idle, when you reved it, my turbo would be sucking leaves off my frame rail. there is a ton of suction! so id be having a fit!

holy crap! idk it is so hard to find responsible competant mechanics at dealers, but for some reason it has become really common.

sad that its expected... definitly do not be afraid to do your own installs in the future and research a bit first to find out how difficult a task is before you decide to pay for install. intake is one of the easiest you can do.
