Dang shift rod or something...

Okay well as you can see, I have a mazda proteg5. Now for the problem. Last summer, I realized that my shift knob really vibrates. So, I decided to change my bushings and while I was at it, I installed a performance short shifter thinking that just maybe it could be the whole thing that was bent or something. Finaly, it wasn't that and now i'm really pissed seen as that all cost me like 300$ (installation and parts).

Now, I just don't know what it could be?! Could it be my shift rod that isn't tight enough or is it my transmission that is ****ed? Have you guys ever had that problem? When i'm in gear and accelerating, the shifter kicks a little.

Mine does the same thing... But mine only vibrates as much as the whole car (feels like its from my exhaust) but I get the kick back while accelerating in gear... lol I thouhgt it was normal, its done that to me on my forenza07, eclipse01, and both of my probes... so idk but GOOD LUCK!

What, does it kick when you get on or off the gas?

That's your stock motor mounts flexing. Mine does it. Totally normal.

My friend told me today about it probably being my engine mounts that a broken or not tight enough and thats resulting in the shifter getting ''hit''.

The way it is is that in gear, it vibrates alot! And when I step on the gas, the shifter kicks (as if it was going ''more'' into the gear).

Anyway, gonna check my engine mounts tomorow! Do you guys know how much it cost to replace?

Where are you?

Aftermarket mm are going to be cheaper than going to the dealership. Su makes the softest mounts.

Where are you?

Far from you! Montreal haha.

I won't go to a Mazda dealership, that's for sure!

Do they only have 2 engine mounts? (front and back) On the net, it says engine and transmission mount in description... is that front and back?

There are 4 mounts. Typically ,the front and passenger side fail first and they are easier to see/replace. Here is what my front mount looked like before I changed it...

those 2 bad mounts caused severe drivetrain lash and flopping shifter.

So I only have to change those 2 if those are the cause? How much did it cost you all together?

If anyone knows places that I could get a good price, that would be great! Here in Canada, the prices are OUTRAGEOUS!!!!

There are several options you can go with. Stock, aftermarket polyurethane types, poly inserts only , even repairing them with RTV silicon. Try searching the forums, those are all discussed ad-nauseum. I went for aftermarket ones. Keep in mind that your interior vibrations/rattles will increase with more rigid mounts. If this bothers you, stay stock. Inspect them and see what you need ,then go from there. ProtegeGarage.com sells aftermarket mounts if you decide to go that route.

You can see the difference in the passenger side mount...

Okay well, I don't care about the car vibrations... I just freaking hate the shift lash... So damn anoying! I think I might get the kit at 300$ (all 4 mounts). I'll wait til it gets hot outside so I can jack up the car.

So when the stock mount tears where I have circled, its considered ripped and basically useless?

pretty much...its torn. so the engine shifts a lot more due to this. my front was almost torn completely and my rear mount looked like raserx' front mm. my shifter would kick out of 3rd all the time.

The rubber where I have circled is pretty much paper thin.....seems like it wouldn't take much for it to tear there

Yeah, Mazda should've designed this mount differently, because if that part is any thicker, you get all the bad vibes in your car.

Yea please answer about the inserts! Would it be way cheaper just to change the inserts?

if i remember correctly if the mount is already torn the inserts wont help. if the mount is fine the inserts will compliment it nicely. but i have awr f/r mounts so id go that route.
