Any photographers in here?

let us tell you what to buy!

please do, i want something that i won't out grow, something that i can upgraded lenses etc etc. I've got about an 800 budget.
i would like to have HD video capture, but not necessary, but would be a bonus. pretty much nikon or cannon

I'd get a T1i. It's a consumer grade camera, but it has the same resolution as my 50d. It also takes HD video, which my 50d does not. Start with the kit lens, and figure out what you like photographing the most, and when your lens starts to become the limiting factor, it's time to upgrade.

Now about the oil and brake pads... ;)

Go to the store and try them in your hands. I wanted to buy Canon 500D (XTi in USA I believe), tried it in my hands and lost interest. Too small for my hands and feels like cheap plastic.

oh, and I recommend the T1i, because it's a canon and I know nothing about nikon.

also, buy all your stuff used and save big bucks.

I +1 this. if you weren't after video I would suggest a 30D.. but... that won't work.

the rebel series does have a "cheap" feel... which really doesn't fit the character (or price tag lol). I love my 20D.

I loved my XTi. Now my girlfriend loves it since I gave it to her.

I must admit I dig the beefiness of the 50d though. Might be because I have huge hands.

Almost bought a second hand 40D. In the end bought PnS Panasonic FZ50, because I wanted to go on a trip, so I had to trade off something.
Also a few pages back they were talking about how many lenses they have and when put on paper its just to much money for me at this time. But definitevly I'm going to buy a DSLR when the time comes.

oh yeah, I have a PnS also. My underwater camera is a PnS, so I use it when I don't want to lug the big boy around... which is pretty much never. haha. I'll take it when I go on my honeymoon though, as snowboarding and big body cameras do not mix.

i have a point and shoot for when i want something portable and not worried about quality, the dslr will mostly be used for car meets and shows, some scenery, there was a new cannon that i tried out at crutchfield but i forgot the model and it had the hd video capture

Yeah, thats more because they can than because they have to. I have a 20d, 50mm mkI, and 18-55 IS, with $500 invested. Realistically a completely functional DSLR kit will cost you a grand if you deal hunt on stuff. I'm talking tripod, telephoto, short lens, storage, filters, and flash (plus other piddly stuff) on top of what I already have.

I still keep my SD800 around for convenience, and to cover up close stuff as it is a wide angle lens.

as in price or quality? i'm assuming price
price. for starter lenses, you could get the 50mm 1.8 (great little lens and its functionality WAY outweighs its cost), a short lens, a general use walkaround lens, and a decent telephoto, all for realistically about $600.

and I'm not talking about cheap junk. any of that money invested can likely be recovered come time to upgrade too.

edit: actually, fitting a short lens into that budget may be rough... as from what I can tell they tend to be the most expensive type.

most likely the T1i, as it's the only one in that price range that captures HD video, I am pretty sure.

For what you want to do, the kit lens will work for a long time. After that, I'd get the 17-85mm f2.3 that canon has. unless you plan on eventually going full frame, then you'd want to get something else.

Anyway, if there is a camera store around you, go pick them up and see what they look and feel like. After that, buy a used one. I was patient in waiting for the right deal on my 50d and I ended up getting a really good deal.

I'd say your estimate is pretty conservative.
