Rear Fogs for Mazda Protege

Hello everyone. This is my first post. I just finished this today and wanted to show you my work. This is about a $5 mod and about 3 hours work. You can add another hour or so if you do it like I did and run the wires through all the factory looms/harnesses/tape to make it all look factory. Basically it's just replacing the 194 bulb at the bottom with a dual filament 5W/21W bulb. I'm using just a factory bulb socket and 7443 bulb. When you just have your taillights on, it's acts just the same as a stock taillight. I believe the 323 in Europe has rear fogs, but I have yet to see any pics. So I don't know if they're set up the way mine are. Here are the results.

I made a little vid for anyone who's interested. I go through several different cycles like taillights on, taillights on with rear fogs on, brake lights on, and brake lights on with rear fogs on. Doing this mod does not affect how the stock taillights normally work. When the rear fogs are off, no one would even know you had rear fogs. They only come on if you switch them on.

I already told him about it, but it seems he has other priorities in mind rather than get rid of the fugly hanging light below is back bumper

all EDM proteges get a rear fog light, but it only lights up in the driver's side... there is a reflective shield installed over the light bulb to concentrate the light/enhance its brightness... you can see the screw holes for the shield if you ever saw the inside of the tail light... neither driver's side or passenger side's lower part of the tail lights light up when they are on... only the driver's side lower half is used for the fog light, nothing else... completely different from the way yours works

the EDM passenger tail light just has nothing in that lower part of the tail light... it is sealed up, no light bulb at all... the australian version has these tail lights on both sides of the car, so no rear fogs, no lower side tail lighting at all

chinese versions also has a rear fog light, setup the same way as EDM... even the newer style tail lights (which no other country got) are setup like that

the 4WD versions of the protege in japan, got the rear fog lights... setup the same way as RHD EDM version (UK style)... FWD versions get normal tail lights and light up the same way as our cars (except lack of side reflector bulb)

on any one of these versions, the rear fog lights are activated by a push button switch next to the dimmer or fog light switch below the driver's side air vent

understand that rear fog lights are equipped only where laws require them... so in japan, only cold weather or 4WD cars are required to have them... they are of course legal to use in any country but not all countries (like the US) require them

like his new rebuild? lol. man, someone's gotta set him strait. wtf is he thinkin?
retrofitting would be very illegal for him also, so he needs to buy the proper EDM tail lights since the vehicle inspectors there look for the ECE markings ;)

hell, he hasn't even gotten EDM mirrors to upgrade his crappy USDM ones either and they're cheap!

his car has been running fine, but his thirst for power is just.......

sounds like he could just stop in at a dealer and do a direct swap, just move hi wiring?

yeah, he can buy the parts from the dealer

they will all bolt on, except he'll need to make his own wiring for the rear fogs

Thanks for all the info. Here's the switch I've been looking for. The last time I saw one for sale "Rear Fog switch" they only had a pic of the 4 switches together. And not one of them was a rear fog switch. IIRC there was a front fog and a headlight aim switch. I asked him about it, if it was a front/rear combo switch he was selling and if that was just a stock photo. I think he might have mistaken the headlight aim switch for the rear fog one. I got no response.

the carfield dude sucks at english or pretends to not understand what you're saying... I know his business practices

anyway, there is a standalone rear fog light switch (looks like our USDM fog light switch but the symbol is backwards... I'm sure you can take one apart and flip the face around)

manual headlight leveling was ONLY required in certain countries in europe.... auto headlight leveling is required for all cars with HIDs in the rest of the world (doesn't apply to proteges)

so unless you plan on getting the OEM fog light kit (rare but available) for your car, don't bother with the combo front/rear fog light switch

there's also the other issue of illumination colors... newer proteges had either amber or green illumination, so you have to becareful what you buy!
if you insist in the combo switch or the rear only switch, I can get you the part number and have someone order it for you

I plan on getting the front fogs eventually. I might take you up on ordering the switch. The Carfield website? or somewhere where they list parts, they had a nice set of the clear corners I wanted. I emailed them but never got a response. Guess they don't check they're email often or they were already sold. They were cheap too. The way you had to inquire about them to buy from them was a little strange though. I'll see if I have a pic of the clear corners.

Here we go. I wanna say they were like $20-30.

those aren't JDM/EDM corners... they're just whatever aftermarket garbage

I can't get the switch... ask some UK dude for help

real JDM/EDM corners have a bulge on the side of them... they allow light to be defused to there and be visible from most of the side of the car (thats why JDM 99-00s didn't have sidemarkers except for the sport20s)

I also recommend upgrading to the EDM headlights (not UK)... they have a much better beam pattern over your stock ones (and are similar to the 01-03 sedans).... it also adds a city light (parking light) inside the headlight so that the corner lights no longer have to be the parking lights... much cleaner look and no more ugly orange for the parking lights.... safer turn signals... no more "dim-bright-dim-bright"... it will be hard finding these lights but since the car is old now, luck maybe with you... you can also get aftermarket stock replacements like bosch (I have the bosch #s if you want)
