Getting GT HID's in sport & stereo question

My aunt is gonna let me trade her HID's with my halogens tomorrow. I know Im gonna have to take the bumpers off. I just was wondering what else is there on the HID's? The balast? Where is it located? Also does anyone know how to remove the HID aiming thing that goes to the driver? I did a search and found a couple but not much.

Also she's going to let me take her Bose stereo...but I'm not sure if I want to because she has an 07 without the piano black... So I would get the stereo and the gas mileage thing but is it worth giving up the piano? I can't decide. The major factor is I'm installing my amp and subs tomorrow in my car and I know the Bose has an amp pre-out witch will make things a whole lot easier but I just don't know if I want to give up the Piano black...Opinions please.

i believe the ballasts are right under the lights....i noticed something that looked like one when i was changing the oil the other day. but because of all the wiring involved, as well as the leveling switch, i would really just consider getting an aftermarket kit instead. that would probably be easier and less chance of error

Good point but money is tight and these are free! Lol. Well I'll just have to look at them and see. If it ends up being to complicated then oh well. But if I can figure it out and it doesn't take 5 hours then I'm gonna.

I plan on just swapping headlights completely. So I'm not really concerned about that everything should just be plug and play...but we'll see.

Any suggestions on the radio? Is it worth it?

the factory HID's look like regular halogens to me. i think they look yucky

i have a sport. and im gutting my stereo. already bought everything for it

Yeah well that's the future plan. I picked up some Subs and an amp for a really good price from my cousin so I'm just gonna hook those up to the stock deck for now. In my opinion the stock sport stereo is pretty kickin. Maybe upgrade the speakers next. Then after that a deck. Idk, I'll see how it turns out tomorrow after I get everything hooked up, who knows I might just be satisfied with the stock deck, speakers and 2 10's.

1. How exactly did you talk your aunt in to this?
2. Your AUNT has an MS3?
3. Any pics of your aunt?

what? do you also think HD television is yucky cuz you can see more details than standard definition?

+1, but dont the GT's have a motorized height lever thingy?

yupperz, which is why i think this person's project is going to turn out a little more difficult than just getting some aftermarkets. although im sure that there's some wiring already there for it (cuz it seems like that would be more cost effective) i don't know where they would be or what to look for. and also, the op is going to have to put in a set of ballasts anyway, and probably take the bumper off to do so.

it just doesn't seem like as much of a plug-and-play project as it looks like it could be.

btw....op you should also get your aunts tail lights....gt leds FTW

The HID swap will probably be more compliacted than just P-N-P. There is a clip going into the ballast that you won't have in your Sport, and I believe that wiring isn't super accessible. The aiming thing isn't a huge deal since you don't technically need it.

Might as well see if the stereo totally clashes with the piano black. I personally wouldn't do it since I like things to look uniform.

the faceplates are easily removable on the stereos, but like stated above, i'd save yourself the hassle and get an aftermarket HID kit...

+1 on how did you CONvince your aunt to do this?

I think it would be easier if you take her car and she takes yours, or just get $60 HID kit and install it yourself

I already got the LED Tails. She actually doesn't care really. When she bought the car she just wanted to fit in. My two cousin's have sti's, my uncle has a camaro, and a close friend has a 87 TT Supra. She didn't really care about anything on the car specific to the GT model other than the leather. Right now she is having trouble making her $850 payment, cause she just got laid off, so she's letting me buy stuff from her to help out. Super cheap though, basically free.

Nope no pictures that I have...

Yeah after looking at the two side by side it seems like it isn't just PnP. I probably won't end up doing it, it seems much harder than I thought. As far as the radio goes, being the Bose model with the amp and "sub" all the wiring and stuff for those will probably be pretty complicated. Fail.

Thanks for all the answers though.

One question for you: Will the GT led tails swap directly to the sport version or is there a wiring issue involved in that???

As for your HID headlight issue, I think it would be too much of a hassle, also the headlight leveling wouldnt work either. Plus the stock HID looks very much like a stock bulb to me.
I would suggest just buying an EBAY $55 hid kit for your sport headlights, that way you can pick the color of your hid output and its easy to install in the stock headlights, it's plug and play and you dont have to take the bumper or headlights out. I'd say its much easier on you just to do that. I did that on my sport model in about 20 minutes of mounting everything and plug and play on my sport halogen lights. Much easier than having to take both cars apart and swapping everything, and was able to get the color I wanted with 8000K, a tad bit of blue to the light hue which I liked compared to the stock 4300K that comes in the gt model HIDs.

Thats just my 2 cents, you can do what you want, but for ease of everything and since $55 is cheap, and you get to choose the color output Id say go that route.

i cant' see why they wouldn't match up, it would be more cost effective if they did.

reasn why I ask if since on the sport model the wiring ends in a socket that you put a bulb in, but since theer is no bulb on the GT its an LED, then what would you plug into the sport bulb socket? Unless the GT Led comes with a socket style wireing plug that plugs into the sport bulb plug, if you get what I mean

i get what you mean now....i was just guessing but yours makes more sense

i have the maint. manual but i don't feel like looking through right now

i would assume for cost reasons they would make it from the factory so that 1 bulb plug would work for the LED and the bulb sport version. I have bought aftermarket LED tails before for other cars and the wiring coming from the led tails ends in a plastic bulb type plug that plugs into the stock bulb socket.

I WISH they made aftermarket LEDS for the hatchback that look like the stock GT led circle, then I'd buy them!

8000k is far to high in the spectrum for safe headlights. A much better figure would be in the 4000 - 5000k range. MUCH more effective, and will cause far less glare for you and for the other people on the road near you. IMHO shops selling 8000k lights are putting others at risk of serious harm, causing the user to not see as well at night, and causing far too much glare for oncoming drivers, leading to accidents.

Here is some further info quoted from knowledgable sources

4300K is brighter than 6000K which is brighter than 8000K which is brighter than 10000K <sic>...etc.

stock OEM HID are all 4300K, why are they blueish ? It's mainly because of the HID optics... also as some else here said, as HID bulbs age, they tend to get "bluer" so 4300K start off kinda yellowish and turn white, 6000K start off white and turn blueish....

as for wiring harnesses, you SHOULD get a wiring harness... the HID bulbs themselves are 35W, yes, but what you don't know is that the ignitor/ballasts is powering the bulb, so what happens is:

12V from battery or alternator goes to ballasts/ignitor, the ballast/ignitor steps UP the voltage anywhere to 85V for steady state power to HID bulb, to over several thousand volts during HID turn on

during steady state operation, the entire HID system (bulbs, ballasts, ignitors) use less power, but during HID turn on, the HID system uses MORE power, thus increased demand on the wires...

just because it turned on the first time, doesn't mean it's ok, as the wiring gets stressed, it can slowly melt, short, detriorate...etc. until one day, it just won't work anymore, or create a fuse to burn out.

You do NOT want to have to replace the stock OEM wiring...

As for advice for increasing stock fuse from 15A to 20A... iffy... as long as the wiring that the fuse controls can handle 20A... some in the car are only rated up to ~15A before they would start to melt...

a proper HID kit comes with a wiring kit and relay... perhaps that's why this is so cheap...
