Painting Rims?

just curious on how guys that have done it went about paintin there stock rims. i have a set of 17" chrome rims on the car now and time for something diffenent. i wanted to paint my stockers black. any help on what types of paints and the procedure would be great. thanks

NO PAINT, get someone professional to PowderCoat them. Unless you just want to see what they look like first you can just get DupiColor paint and just see how they look, but Powdercoating is much better.

i am not lookin to spend a lot of $$. i am not a show car by any means. though it is a competition car. i got my stock rims just layin around and figured i'd change m up and see how they came out.
 
If you're gonna paint them, read up and do it right the first time. It will take s*** tons of time......

OR

A buddy of mine got a full set of extra wheels and tires for his jeep for $200 on craigslist. He washed and scrubbed them down. Air dry. A few coats of Duplicolor wheel paint followed by a few coats of duplicolor wheel clear (not allowing any coat to set all the way).

They came out well and didn't chip or flake. Biggest issue is that you are stuck with Duplicolor's wheel paint color selection.

I have used engine enamel paint on many things with fantastic results. I assume that might be another option.

i used a couple of cans of krylon spray paint on my, to me it looks damn good and as eazy as hell, take the tire off clean it put playing cards between the rim and tire and paint away, here is what it looks like after almost a year(should have shined it before the pic oh well haha)

its all about how you prep and being gentle with the coats. very light coats over LONG periods of time and you will be fine. i just finished up my redoing my stocker. with these i hand polished them to a bright shine (i had oe chromies to begin with), used a gun metal anodized color coat followed by lots of clear for protection. then i topped it off with a reflective red pin stripe around the lip. i love them and get lots of compliments on them:)
 
like kudakev615 said take you time, do light coats of paint dont try to cover the whole rim in one shot haha
 
thanks guys, i have nothing but time to work on them. there in a heated shortage out back from my work. so i was just gonna use my lunch breaks and free time to work on them. my car is almost a burgendy color and i am sorta stuck between black or copper for colors. any suggestions?

i got the idea for them when i was doing my motorcycle wheels. i orded from the ebay dealer that i posted. they have great customer service. i ordered them in 3mm width in the 16" diameter. i guess since a bike wheel is bigger, you have plenty enough to tape to cover all wheels and they include 2 extra strips incase you fudge up. but with the reflectiveness to them, they look SICK at night right at the certain angle where they shine. have 2 extra full sets sitting around if ppl are interested.

Hey kudakev615 is there any chance these things can start peeling off how long do they last? they do look hawt on them black wheels very interested
 
they will not peel off. once you press firmly on the tape once youve got it lined up ITS NOT COMING OFF. cause the tapes reflective, its similar to mail box numbers, in that they dont peel off. they will crack into little pieces. i am pretty sure you would have to use a sander to get them off and repaint the wheel. so you better be sure you like them and that they are lined up perfectly cause they are permanent. but in the other hand the regulare NONrelective tape does come off with some elbow grease and they hold up just fine onna motorcycle wheel at 180mph:)

Hey kudakev615 do you think i should go wit te 3mm red strip or 6mm it will go on a 17" MSP Racing heart wheel OH! and did you go with dark red or red?LMK -Thanks
 
i dunno??? i would clear them then apply the stripe. thats what i did, never heard of clearing OVER the strip. are you still afraid if them peeling of or sum thang?

yea I actually ordered them of that site u posted but havent gotten around in to doing it.
