Quick Thread on Oil... again yes.

So I just got my last free oil change from the deal blah blah blah you know how the story goes

Long story short...

Put 6 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum in the car. Checked the dip stick and it's above the full mark. Yet the manual says 6 quarts...

Should I start putting 5.5 quarts in? Or is it ok to run this motor with a little extra lube?

i too found this to be a problem...I went with 6qts on my first oil change...thinking that the manual recommends 6qts with filter....and thats what I exactly did

next day before I take off for work in the morning, my oil is above the F mark! I proceed to pull the drain plug and let some oil out...

next time I'm going with 5qts then topping it off as necessary...this is after the motor sits over night

I did the same and figured it was because I had just filled it without starting the engine. After letting it run and rechecking it was fine. I say leave it alone and put the even 6 quarts in. No issues here doing it that way.

these cars burn oil, even for me it burns 0.5 qts every 5000 miles. So I say leave it alone, dont try to have it perfect all the or else you will be messing with it every day. A little extra oil wont hurt, having not enough will though.

do not overfill, and do not put in an even 6qt right away! more oil does not mean you're better off

if you plan on changing your own oil there's a good how-to already. but for quick reference, they way you do it is drain it, and then put in a little over 5 qts. then you start it up and let it run for about 30 seconds so that the filter gets oil moving through it. then you shut the engine off and check the dipstick.

at this point you may be around the low level line, that's fine. just start pouring in some oil about a cup or two at a time and keep checking the dipstick until it's between those lines, i like filling mine on the side of full and not exactly in between.

it all depends on what operating temp your engine is at, and how long you allow your oil to drain. if it's really hot and you let it drain until you only see a drop of oil coming out every 15 seconds, you'll probably have to put in more oil. if you only let it warm up for a minute, and you drain the oil until it's a thin stream, you'll probably put in less oil

The Stealership changes my oil. since my car is still under Warentee, I let they do it, so if someone was to break something, They gotta pay for it.

So as far as the last paragraph you typed, I have no idea how they filled it or anything. I'll check the oil when I get back from school today and see where I'm at.

Well then if you check your oil do after you shut off the engine and wait 5 minutes. It also says that in the owners manual

The most you're overfilling it will be 1/2 a quart. That's not enough to make a difference to anything besides the dipstick.

If you had bad oil rings, overfilling can cause spark plug fouling and emissions problems, but 1/2 a quart overfull on a tight engine won't even be noticable.

not all burn oil, mine doesnt burn oil at all (yet). The full 6qt does put it maybe .5qt over the full line but mine has stayed steady there for over 3k miles. If its not starting to bubble on your dip stick when your checking it I wouldnt worry about it.

ok good.

so basicly I just wont put that whole quart bottle in next time. Since i gotta buy a 5 quart and then a single 1 quart.

I buy a 5-quart and a 1-quart jugs, put in ~5.5 quarts (using the dipstick as a guide), then save the ~0.5 quarts in case I burn any oil before the next change.

and i drink that extra .5 quarts for breakfast (naughty)

this is definite proof that every MS3 is indeed different...i've done only 2 oil changes so far, but both times it took EXACTLY 6.0 qts to have it right at the 'full' mark on the dot.

so far it's not burning a drop of oil, and it's really satisfying to check the dipstick when i gas up and see it rock steady spot-on the mark.

i'm not an expert, but believe that if it's only 1/2 qt over, it's good rather than bad. keep those turbo bearings happy! (bowdown)

if you check it after sitting overnight it will read over. I do that all the time. i do not want to warm it up for the recommended 5 min. the exhaust fumes make me act normal. hate that! since changing to Mobil 1 5-30, i have not added a drop.

^^^ what he said. after oil change start the car so the oil will flow throughout. Then check dipstick. Should be at full mark. After the car has been sitting for awhile the oil will drain back into the crank which makes it over the full mark. 6qt is good and shouldn't be burning enough off to add oil before 5000miles.

I put 5.5 in on my last change (sunday) and it was a .5qt too low. So I put the last .5qt in.. So for me it took all 6qts..

if you guys didn't know, not all the oil comes out when you drain it out, unless you drop the oil pan and clean it out. I would say about .25-.5 quarts remain in there. I just changed my oil, dropped the oil pan, removed the BS, bolted on the spin-on converstion, and it gobbled up about 7 quarts of oil.

Also, its not advised to overfill. This can lead to smoking turbo issues.

I think its pretty easy to argue that in these DISI 2.3l motors that a 0.5 qt overfill is not a big issue at all. It wont cause smoking turbos. The smoking turbos is a heat and seal issue, not an oil issue. If anything, not enough oil would cause smoking turbos.
