Progress update with some pretty pictures.

Wiring is quite involved, I'll give a full write up once I'm sure it'll work. Basically I still have both ECUs The P5 one controls everything besides the engine and fuel pump. The KL one just controls the engine.

As for power steering, the high pressure line bolts right into the pump, and for the return line, I took the suction pipe off of both pumps, and braised them together so that it bolts to the kl pump with the smaller P5 return.

Stock cross member, stock half shafts, Mx3 Jack shaft (the one that bolts to the block for the passenger side)

One thing to note is the clearance between the frame rail and the power steering pulley is very very tight. I'm considering pulling the engine and bashing it in with a maul. You might want to do this. I'll take a pick of the suspect area if you're interested.

Thanks for all of the info. I was mainly concerned about the power steering pressure line as I know I can splice the return line no problem. I was going to try to run just the 626 ECU, which I still might do. The wiring sounds like a bit of a hassle though.

Good progress and thanks again for the help. I was hoping to get to this swap first but you beat me to it. :) My brother keeps asking me how this or that will work and I hate answering "We'll see when we get there". lol

ryan, what all r u doin to the motor before you put it in??

Timing belt, water pump, valve cover gaskets, rear main seal, I'm not sure whatelse. My dad is a Mazda Master Tech and has broken down and rebuilt a few KLs, 1 for his ProbeGT, a ZE for my brother's MX-6, and a few others. Basically he tells me what to order, I'll order it, and he'll have me watch, help, and learn. lol

Very nice but for me this type of work is best done in the living room just to make the wife happy. +1 on the creepy doll haha.

you going to get the stock tacho working, or just throw an aftermarket unit in? KLZE is a beasty engine - protege will fly with one of those under the hood!.

I loathe aftermarket tachs, I'll get the stocker working with an adaptor for the 6 cyl.

Awesome...

Only downside to that i spose, is that the KLZE is more than capable of revving off the P5 tacho.

best of luck... be sure and post some stuff over in the NA tech section - plenty of guys over there would love to hear about your progress on this swap.

My brother and I looked into it briefly and discovered that there's no difference in the 626 tach from the FS to the KL...so we're thinking that it might work with the KL ECU. Granted I will be using the '99 ECU whereas you have a ZE so it's probably different in some odd way.

It'll need a signal pulse adapter to read correctly.

Wouldn't be too hard to make one if you have access to a signal generator and an oscilloscope though. You could make one for about 10 or 15 bucks in components.

Congrats!!! You have firsted this. I haven't gotten anywhere yet but hope to have it done by the end of January. I hope.

Post pics/videos/whatever, this is great!

I can't get a hold of my stupid insurance company to put liability back on it, and the exhaust shop closes at 3. ahahh. oh well.

pardon my ignorance new to Mazda's, is the KL the 2.5 V6 from the earlier MX6 and MX3?? looks like it..

Yes, except the MX-3 had the K8 which was the 1.8L variant. The 2.5L KL was in the '93-'02 626, '93-'97 MX-6 LS/Probe GT, and the Millenia.

very nice, that should give some nice torque !! well done.. vid???

hmm, I could take a video with my digi cam, but it sucks for video. Think P5 just louder, and faster.

Took it for a nice country drive today. Really nice to drive, has the power to suit the handling now. I haven't really pushed it yet, as I have cheap oil in it to flush out the engine, and a brand new clutch assembly. I have the throttle limited to about 3/4. Still it pulls nicely, and it's very smooth (except idle due to open exhaust).

No difference in the corners. I'm very pleased with it so far. I have an appointment tomorrow to get the exhaust welded up, so it should be quiet and idle properly (hopefully).
