question on running hks full recirc

what exactly do you have to do to run the HKS in full recirculation? also if you have or are currently running it this way whats your opinion?

and if you got a specific kit like the cp-e give your opinions on its quality as well

trying to decide between the HKS and Forge right now.

I went with HKS because I did not want to mess with springs, screws, and shims; the HKS is bolt on and forget about it.

The HKS will come with everything you need--as long as you buy the CP-E or PG ready to bolt up kit. You reuse your stock circulation hose. All you need to do is rotate it a little.

It is my personal opinion that the HKS SSQV is the best BPV out there for this car. I love mine!!!

Unfortunately, the MS3 does not like to be VTA...the engine runs bad and backfires a lot.

If you have the money, spend a little extra and get the HKS bolt-on kit.
You won't be disappointed...

Good luck!! (2thumbs)
Let us know what you end up with...

to make the ssqv recirc you just need to get the recirc fitting i dont remember what size you get i think 19 or 21mm but anyway. on the valve there are 8 screw allen key style, you take out 4, it tells you the order on in the directions.. any way that takes off the front piece you then change the out the fin piece with the recirc piece. bolt her back up and that it hook up the hose bolt it to the car and go....

auto x thanks for your opinion but the usual question (cant resist) hows it sound? if i do get it i am definitley going to buy the kit though. hopefully ill order one soon or put it on the wish list for christmas.

skeeter thanks for the explanation, sounds easy enough to switch it to recirculation.

hks

I got the mazda speed 3 specific hks kit and its great
You do have to clock the vacuum housing a bit so the nipple dosent hit the hood. You do also have to trim the TMIC cover a bit but it dosent seem to be as much as some guys with the CPE or PG hks flange. I have it set in recirc and it is LOUD. low boost you get a nice whoosh and when really laying into it, it will give that nice HKS "flutter". I wouldnt say it made any HP, but i wasnt really expecting that either. Over all im really pleased with this kit.

call me crazy but i'm currently running the hks full recirc and im not a fan of the sound. as far as performance it does its job

Thats EXACTLY what I experienced, so I went with a TurboSmart and I JUST LOVE IT!! best money I've ever spent!

Just got my hks on in vta. With the recirc cap it idles like stock and only backfires a bit and shifts are rich, but its completely livable for me. It sounds fantastic AND I can take out the fin and get a really loud whoooosh with no whistle at all.

I would say that nothing on this car should be run vta, get a hybrid, bpv, or bov in recirc. I'm selling a hybrid turbo xs btw. pm if interested.

i was looking into the turbo xs at first but i dont like the fact that its adjusted by a screw on top i also dont have a boost gauge so it'd be tricky to tune it properly until i get my gauge(s)

You adjust by placing washers inside. People have run 2-4 with with no issues, but most prefer on 4. It's not like other valves where the car runs badly when not adjusted properly. I ran it for a week each on 2, 3, 4, and 5 washers. Couldn't decide between 3 and 4, but they all felt completely driveable with no idle, shift, or backfire issues. Didn't see any difference in boost between the settings

thanks lestat, for some reason i was thinking of the turbosmart...if you dont mind me asking why'd you switch from the turbo xs to the hks?

Well, being a musician and music teacher, I love sound, especially turbo car sounds... and I am a perfectionist. I ended up running the turbo xs hybrid, then a greddy s in vta, then recirc, then single spring recirc, then greddy type-rs recirc, and now the hks. phew. yeah, I know, I have a problem (peep)

turbo xs and greddy type-rs are both for sale right now btw

I did it for sound. There was nothing wrong with performance, I just needed a louder whoosh. The greddy valves both ran awfully in vta and the rs wasnt nearly loud enough even though what I heard was really nice. Even recirc it was a noticeable whoosh, just wasn't attention grabbing from 2+ blocks like the hks whoosh. HKS vta without any fins sounds fantastic!! If anyone with an hks hasn't tried, I highly recommend it.

all you hear with the hks in full recirc are the sequential valves opening and closing, sounds like flutter with no whistle and maybe a little bit of woosh. i'm scared to switch over to the darkside and go the VTA route but im tempted

Running in VTA is really not much louder than recirc.

thanks to everyone for all the replies but ive decided im gonna try out the hks im hopefully getting it for xmas if not ill order it as soon as i notice it missing from under the tree(thumb)

well i tired it VTA. it was only a little bit louder at most, but i was too lazy to take off the recirc fitting or to put in the triple fin so that could have had something to do with it. i hated the way my car ran VTA, it smelt like gas, between shifts the car felt different, and my butt dyno was teling me the car felt slower

I have been running on VTA for a while for my HKS, and for the past few days I finally managed to get all my piping correct to have it running in BPV mode.

Pros:
-no more backfires (no more melting my cats!)
-no more running too rich
-butt dyno says the car is running smoother and stronger
-I can now hear the turbo spool up quite loudly (perhaps meaning it's holding boost better?)

Cons:
-a lot quieter...no more "pssh" sounds and the car is generally less grumbly
-my recirc piping is not set up 100%, so it might pop off soon (this is a case-by-case basis)

I've never found the car to smell bad even on VTA...I also miss the sound a lot since the "pssh" sound from the HKS is the signature of a turbo'd car. I also have a Fujita F5 CAI as well, for those interested in my setup. I might go for a testpipe later (or maybe just a resonator delete). Shifting also feels the same.
