ok, so i know everyone and their brother think they know everything when it comes to modification and what and what not that you need. I have a serious question and if you do not have knowledge about the information, please do not post your beliefs.

with that said i have a few questions

1) When and why should a person use step colder plugs ? i know they are used to cool the temperatures in the combustion chamber thus being more efficient but when with the speed3 are they needed ? Only when boost is increased or is it possible to benifit from them with your car stock ?

2) When using a boost controller manual, im guessing that i would just watch my boost gauge start at zero while going up a quarter of a turn untill desired boost ? also what is the max boost that you should stop at in order to keep the motor in good condition and reliable power ?

3) Top mount intercooler.... I know when it comes to subaru's the factory intercooler is good up to a certain amount of boost before it is considered non-efficient. At what type of boost is our intercooler not efficient.

Thank you in advance for your knowledge ! (p5silver)

1 - when boost is increased as u say or when any other modification causes the cylinder temps to increase - no need on a stock boosted car

2 - you don't need to start it at 0, just at or below the stock boost and then work up slowly from there - just watch how u have it hooked up as a connection to the turbo-to-wga hose causes more spikes than a connection to the bpv line (< my recommendation) - the general consensus is 18 psi but do a search for posts from member "tru-boost" - he runs his mbc at 20-21 and believes the car is fine at that boost - i'd say for short bursts u may be but don't go tracking the car on a roadcourse at that boost

3 - i'm not sure if anyone knows that for sure but tunes out there from piasini, cobb, cp-e, & unichip bump it up to 18 - a better ic for sure will allow u to up it to that 20 figure if ur so inclined

My personal boost will be 20 when i can with my mods BUT i do have a way to warn on knock retard of 4 and i'll be monitoring cylinder temps closely when i get to that point.

I wouldn't count on unichip. I just checked there website and it states as being an unsupported application.

I appreciate ur anwsers very much. I have a good amount of knowledge with automotive systems but when it comes to turbos i dont have alot of knowledge in this field. I am shooting for 20 psi within the next year. Im starting with all the precationary stuff first because with my experience and people who have destroyed their cars its worth having all the information avaible to you first. Im goign to get the HKS suction intake very shortly follwed by a cobb adjustable shifter and turbo xs bypass valve. I then want to maybe turn up the boost to 18 psi untill i can afford a front mount intercooler/upgraded topmount and the money to get my car dyno tuned. Then i will hopfully move forward in an effort to push 20 psi.

If you have any more information or suggestions about upgrades let me know. I used to buy stuff because it was cheep when i was younger, but found out quickly quality comes with $

Are you gonna try for 20psi on the stock turbo or upgraded one??

Also if 20psi is your goal please also consider getting an upgraded fuel pump. Boost is nothing without fuel and the stock pumps in these cars tend to run lean even at stock boost levels.

1 the general consensus is 18 psi but do a search for posts from member "tru-boost" - he runs his mbc at 20-21 .
He is running a reworked stocker. Did he run that much boost on the stock turbo? I would stick with 18 psi.

I would not turn up the boost much untill you have replaced the downpipe and testpipe. Also make sure that the HKS intake has an airflow straighener. If not I would choose another brand that does. If you use a manual boost controller you will have to mess around with map clamps, to avoid boost cut.

Personally I think the cobb AccessPORT is the way to go. IF you replace your downpipe and testpipe you can run stage 2. My car holds 18 psi with the the sri stage 2 msf map. The air fuel ratio is also much better, being in the mid 11s rather than low 10s on the stock tune. My car boost cuts stock tune. With the the AccessPORT none of the stock tunes issues are present.
