Dilemma! Mazda VS Volkswagen

jetta! get the 2002+ they have a k03s and they push 180hp, chip it and youll have 200hp with 250TQ. performance wise jetta wins, but only if you get the turbo. if your really getting a 00 then i dont think the jetta came with a 1.8T, only a 2.slow and a vr6..atleast get a 01+, they came with a 1.8T but only 150hp.

The 2000 jetta comes with the 1.8 turbo which is the one i was considering but my friend who owned a 98 couldnt even start his car after a while, the ac broke, windows busted it fell right in and had a whole load of electrical problems. Im not modding the motor but if i did get a jetta i would get the turbo

either a 00 or a 99 jetta

NO!

MKIV 1.8T from the very early model MKIV.

Electrical issues, catalytic convertor hates life, known for burning over 1 qt oil per 1000 miles, premature rear brake wear(and a funky caliper design to boot, special tool required), CEL will be on like a bad habit for any kind of crazy stuff. You have to scan it with a Vag-com vs. a OBDII because of the detail in the codes.

I sold my 1.8 for my P5.

Walk away man, just walk away.

It was fun to drive, monsoon sound system was nice, cleaned up really well, had plenty of aftermarket parts for it. But still.....

Window regulator failure FTL! At least 150 to fix it, then you can worry about the other three.

MKIII and MKIV have this issue.

yup yup, i thought they only came out with them on 01 nvm then.

I cant really believe that this is even being debated!!! First off, if your gonna compare a 1.8t Jetta to anything, it should be a car in the same class. How bout the '03 MSP. you cant really compare the turbocharged jetta to a non turbochaged ES.

Secondly if you are going to compare the MSP to the 1.8t Jetta you in a better position with the Protege. Not only in regard to looks but also reliablity, MPG's, Handling and an overall better car. I have a mod-ed ES and I spank the hell out of my best friends mod-ed Audi A4.

Both cars for the most part have short comings in the same areas... both have trash stock ECU's get over that hurdle and then you have a competition with the Protege edging out the WHACK ASS chick CAR OF A JETTA!!!

rofl, my msp has been down from parts failing for over 60% of the time I have owned it...nearly every single msp has or will break their lsd....the rods go out, even when stock...the tune is bad...the wastegate goes out

the msp is far from reliable, but if you have the ability to fix these things then I would root for it over the jetta

just know what you are getting into with both cars, the msp isn't that glorious of a car and doesnt really outrun many other cars out there (Ive personally not had much luck from a roll or a dig when racing other cars, except for when I was heavily modified)...its actually quite a dissappointment power wise....however, handling wise it goes unchallenged against many cars, some 2-3 times the cost of it

reliability...no..mazdaspeed protege is not reliable...sorry...maybe if you take off the turbo..then yes..otherwise...no....maybe your new here, or you havent read this forum Owner's Guide: Mazdaspeed Protege Problems & Solution

the protege has so many problems, its not even funny, and vw electric, is minor, do some research..easy fix compared to changing a lsd or manifold..sorry bud..

like i said, a 1.8T wont break unless you go over 300hp..your all good...

i dont want to be labeled a fanboy, im not, i own both car. and the jetta has its share of problems too..

the only problems i would watch out with the jetta are : MAF, timing belt and water pump, coilpack. ETC......
but the timing belt change for mazda is also 80K miles...and the maf also goes bad on a msp..and the coilpack, we vw ****** up there, but people are always parting out vw's on vortex, and they are pretty cheap..

I would advice to go with a protg not just because you are on Mazda forum. In my family we had 1998 vr6 jetta, 1999 2.slow jetta, 2003 GLI and 2006 passat 2.0t. While I absolutely love vw interior, low end torque and drivability, the only way I will ever have another vw is a lease while under factory warranty. Maintenance costs are insane for a budget car, and electrical problems are far too common. I had them on my brand new 06 passat within first few month of owning. 2003 gli had to get towed to the dealer twice in the first 6 months for failing ecu. Older jettas are prone to have power windows fail among numerous other electrical problems. Its ok if you can go to the junk yard, get the part, and do the job yourself, but if not, you are stuck paying 150-200 bux each time.
Also owning my 5th Mazda now, I can tell you that I have greater luck with reliability than any other brand, but that's just my experience.

by the way im looking at a 01-03 protege es

reliability...no..mazdaspeed protege is not reliable...sorry...maybe if you take off the turbo..then yes..otherwise...no....maybe your new here, or you havent read this forum Owner's Guide: Mazdaspeed Protege Problems & Solution

the protege has so many problems, its not even funny,
here this may clarify things. we're in the 3rd gen section, he said he's looking at an ES, and he has not mentioned modding just wanting a nice car. no talk of an MSP from the OP so its issues and reliability track record don't belong in this thread. a protege es will be more reliable than a 99-00 1.8T jetta

we were not talking to the original poster, we were talking to the guy saying he should get a msp and then referencing to his turbo protege es

it was a side tangent, yes
[/threadjack] there

however, I still also stand by my earlier saying that his budgets gotta be able to include more than just those two cars....I wouldn't get either, just because the pro is extremely slow and the jetta has electrical problems....theres more than those two cars out there in which you can get a LOT more bang for your buck even if you are on a budget

lol wow too much talk about random things here
Some guy around me is considering selling his MP3, only thing coming close to a mazdaspeed protege
But for now its still between the 01-03 mazda protege es, maybe a MP3, and the jetta

suggestions please

the suggestions would depend on your budget

how much are you looking to spend and where are you located?

autotrader.com, cars.com, craigslist.com, etc... are a few good sites to look around in

I personally dont like hondas, but they are really reliable cars at a great price...toyotas, nissans (maybe find a nice 240 to do some mods to?)...if your price range is a little higher then you could look into finding a rx-7 FC, or finding something along those lines

I have a friend who just bought a 93 BMW 325i for under 3 grand, in pretty damn good condition too

theres a lot more out there than jettas and proteges ;-)

but if you found an mp3 Id HIGHLY recommend that....handles like a DREAM, doesn't have the reliability problems of the msp, however the tradeoff is it isn't as powerfull as the msp....however, it is much peppier than the regular protege due to a much better tuned ECU

dont make the mistake a LOT of people do by setting their mind on a particular car and then winding up getting thrown into it only to find out that it probably wasn't a good buy after you have already bought it for one reason or another....even I made that mistake...dont get me wrong, I <3 my msp, however I picked it up purely because it was more affordable than the speed3 and the color sold me on the spot, then I found out a couple days later about all of its reliability issues and have been paying the price ever since (over 10k into it now)....a little research never hurts, youd be QUITE surprised at some of the great deals you can find on cars...for example, there was an 03 evo 8 with some nicely done mods selling locally to me not too long ago for $12,500 with only 30k miles

yeah but my budjet is kinda low
However I just like the look and feel of volkswagens better than my protege currently
Im seeing the MP3 tomorrow, he said one of the engine mounts needs to be replaced tho

lol (thinks to slef, im posting to much in the past 10 minutes) but really dude its your finial verdic, i mean.. my dad has a passat, i love the thing nice interior fun to drive its just a badge to me really, even tho its about jettas (never drove one so cant tell you) but my 03 lx is my first car so of course im going to love the thin to death (untill it starts acting up like tonight >:[ ) but dude it depends on your preference.
1. VW is a good company just like mazda
2. it depends what your looking for in the car.. speed? luxury? or just economic.
i dont care to much for VW mainly because i wrecked my dads :o haha (some one side swiped me and ran...)
But just look at the long run :]
