Ok, long story short, I am in need of a replacement engine for my Mp3. What is the difference between the two engines. There must be some because when i am searching for one they are vin specific, i think the mp3 is a 7 when regular proteges are a 5 or 6. Correct me if im wrong. Im just lost here because it seems the only one for sale in the U.S. has 48,000 miles on it and its selling for over 1,200 bucks(chair). Any help would be great!!!!!

Just find a 2.0 ltr Protege engine, it's the same. The only difference is the ECU, but since you have that already, it will work with any Protege 2.0 engine. www.car-part.com is a good site to find one. If it ends up being too expensive for a new one, just forge your engine (burnout)

What he said.

You can put a 2.0 3rd gen engine in your MP3 and it will work, but the ECU for the MP3 is tuned for premium, and they didn't have the VICS (butterfly assemblies in the intake manifold). Some places might charge a premium for an MP3 engine, so just find a 2.0 from a reg. Protege.

Hey thanks for your responses guys/ gals. And the search thing, yea i do alot... but the dumb ass sales people kept telling me there were other differences, so i thought i would ask the pros haha.

I hear ya man.. but if you search this forum itself you'll find way more info on our cars then searching the net. I think even the door handles have been discused here.

i've been on alot of orther forums for orther cars and i think by far this forum has the nicest people in it. you ask a question like that on like a celica forum and no one answers just just make fun of you. so props to the MP3 famly

I did some hunting on car-part.com and found 2 engines not too far from me, Lincoln Park and Belleville for under $1200. Definitely do some hunting on there.

My question, not sure if the AT and MT engines are different, but I can't imagine why they would be. They list them as seperate options on the website when searching, but have the same ending VIN code (IE 5 or 6, MSP engines are 7 or 8)

Well i have been searching around on car-part . com, just take out the spaces. You can replace it with any 2.0 MT engine.

well i think im going for a jasper engine...Its 3 grand but with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. Which i will probably hit that 100,000 first, so im tinking it will be worth it.

i have done 4 motors in mine, the on thats in it now is and automatic,it will still work with 5 speed trans, their 1 or 2 smaller bolts that dont line up, the rest line up the same.. so take what you can find, swap the intake mani, and your set..

Actually, the MP3 intake manifold doesn't have VTCS. Similar, but different.

okay don't yell at me but... i need a new motor to, and lets just say i don't know a lot about cars... you said the only diff is the ecu but since you have that already.... is that something that would needed to be taken off the old motor or is that something that would still stay with the car?(help)

As far as the engine itself, there is no difference. However, you need to make sure that if you have an MP3 and buy a non MP3 engine, they only replace the block and not the intake manifold. Sometimes people will do a swap while removing as few parts from the block as possible so they can save money on gaskets and labor. You want a long block (includes the head). A short block doesn't include the head.

Good luck with your swaps. A local MP3 owner here just had his motor swapped out with the engine from a P5, after I took care of an exhaust leak for him that the shop missed, everything is running great.
