protege 5 vs new mazda 3

End all the controversy. The Mazda3 with EITHER motor is faster than the P5. We took an auto Mazda3 hatch from work, and my wifes P5 with a stick and the 3 spanks it everytime.

You should really drive one, the 3 sedan with the 2.3 and a stick isnt much slower than a Speed.
It's probably really close, but the MSP should still win. (outie)

The speed will win most likely, the 3 is pretty good stock but its not that good, once some mods come out for it then the 3's will be a pretty good car to race i think... Just my .02 though.

The gearboxes are the same too.
What do you mean...between the 2.3L and 2.0L in the 3 or the 3 to the Pro5? I'm pretty sure the tranny in the 3 is a new design. It's freakin' awesome, much smoother than the Pro5 I drove (in which the tranny was very similar to my 626).

it's definately a 2.3... (the car is fully loaded) and i know the driver was pushing it... i could hear it... i guess i will have to find out this weekend... but i have to agree with ceej... it will turn out to be who the better driver is... but i still think the p5 is a much better car... alot less expensive... and handles alot better if you ask me...

The gearboxes are the same in that the gear ratios and the final drive are all the same. The G35M-R in the MZ3 is cable actuated while the G15M-R is rod actuated.

I think it was Auto Week that summed up the 3 best. It's more grown up than the last Protege, but it also lost the fun factor in it's maturity.

I've driven a 3 on the interstate, and it might be because I was higher in the 3 than in the P5, but it felt a lot faster on the acceleration. If you both get up to speed (120-130) and hit traffic, it'll be up to the ballsier driver. But other than that, the 3 would probably take you.

My wife hates autos... half the reason I married her :)
hehe... my girl hates automatic too... girls who drive stick rule!!!
but she isn't too much into me spending money on my car :-(

I'd like to buy the new burnt orange m3....it looks great and those things are CHEAP!! you can get a 3S with cloth and no nav here for $16.7msrp...no telling what Iu could walk out of there with.....now if someone wants to buy my modded P5 I'd go get one. Hands down....but truth be told, my little P5 has bested many fastar cars at the track. 90% of racing is the person behind the wheel.

LOL! My wife is the one that bought the Mazdaspeed and I bought the Protege5. She learned how to drive a stick in one day. Just goes to show, the better you are with a stick in the bedroom, the better you are with one on the road. (butthump)

all mazda 3 hatches have the 2.3 engine. Regardless of how you feel about the looks, the 3 is faster, just the way it is. Both are fantastic cars, the 3 just has a bit more umph to it.

3 will beat the p5 everytime.

I have proven that a few times now lol. Its close at first but then the 3 starts to pull away slowly.
