How far will a mbc\map clamp take me??

Well finally after almost a year i can start to mod my Speed3. Ive been reading about all the trial and error you pioneers have gone through and Im ready to put that experience to use as I begin my project. The core of my question is with a upgraded fuel pump (either mrlilguy or CP-E, havent decided) how far will a mbc and Split Second map clamp take me before I need additional engine management?? I'm not really satisfied with either the Standback V2 or AP in their current forms but want to be able to make some decent power.

In addition to those 3 pieces (cdfp, map clamp, mbc) I plan to have TBE, Synapse Hybrid BOV, Corksport FMIC w/ RAM Air intake, DNP exhaust mani and a Dashhawk for tuning. I figure I can get up to 18psi on the stocker as I have seen that done here already but I just wanted to verify. Can I upgrade to a GT28 or GT3071 with that setup? Can the map clamp change voltage enough to cause enough fuel to flow as long as the AFR is within spec?

Just curious what the limits are of this setup. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

when good, complete engine management is available, a map clamp and a boost controller will not be necessary. For all intents and purposes, a map clamp and a boost controller is a 'band-aid' form of engine management.

When the ECU can actually be programmed you will be able to control fuel, boost, timing, ignition, injector parameters and no longer need to trick the ecu or wastegate into giving you more boost.

You wouldn't want to upgrade to a garrett turbo until at the very least, you can control fuel-- best case scenario you would want to wait until some good tuning is available for a turbo upgrade.

Or.....you could get bolt the car to hell. Then add a gt3071 with a cpe standback v2. Clamp the map at 13... and turn the boost up to 18psi. Then you could add fuel down low, pull it up top for more power.... advance a little timing up top too.

Make a ton of dyno pulls to make sure your a/f looks good and the pressure is as well.

Yeah .... you could do that right now.

I did.

You are so wrong

The Map Clamp and MBC will be fine for 18PSI and hold you for some time to come. Maybe one step colder plugs as well added to your mod list.

I didn't say it was impossible.

I just prefer not to spend $600 hack up my wiring harness and also have the ability to clear CELs and delete factory throttle control, and do all of the other things that a piggyback won't and can't do. But that's just me.

you can take a MBC and a MAP clamp a lonnggggg way ! it is true a good EMS will be able to do the things these 2 components do, but there is still not a good EMS out there ! not to mention you can get a MBC and MAP clamp for under $100 ! i have all the mods in my sig and run that set up. i also have a corksport downpipe and the new PG big wheeled K04 on the way too. and guess what....the MAP clamp and MBC are staying ! i can tell you this. my car is going to make the people who spent thousands $$ more than me pull their hair out very soon.
the car was trapping 107-110 all day just this past weekend on stock tires. with the 2 new mods and some slicks watch for DEEP 12 second passes on slicks very soon !........ with low boost !

Ah yes forgot about the colder plugs. Thanks for that reminder.

Thats sweet the setup would work with the upgraded K04. I was debating on that or spending the money on a GT28 but now I wont bother...at least for the forseeable future. Definitely looking to get the most for the least. This sounds perfect.

Dude you rock, I love people who figure out how to do stuff better for less. A couple of questions for ya: 1) do you like your MBC? would you buy it again ?
2) map clamp - which one do you have ?
3) ignition coil stretch ? please explain
4) 107-110 trap WOW !! I'm impressed!

1) yes i love the turbo smart MBC
2) i got the aobe map clamp on ebay
3)coil stretch is easy. when you pull the coils off the plug simply pull off the long shaft that drops down to the plug. inside the shaft there is a spring. stretch it out in the center where it is thick. put it back together.....done.
4)thank you

Well sure I guess you could do that. And that would be OK.!

well just an update on how far a MBC/MAP CLAMP can go.
12.8@108MPH thats how far i have gone with it so far. more to come !

Thats awesome 12.8@108MPH Congrats Tru-boost I have my Map Clamp with the TS MBC and the CPE DP waiting for installation I hope I can get similar results

If your going to buy a boost controller I would recomend buying an electronic boost controller. Electronic Boost controllers have multiple options that justified the little extra cash when i purchased my boost controller. With an electronic boost controller you can make adjustments while your in the car. You can change how quickly the turbo spools, an EBC has its own soleniod, boost limiter function, and practically 3 settings (Hi,lo, valet/off). Considering that for an extra $100 to $150 you can find a greddy EBC or an apexi EBC, the decision to purchase an EBC over a MBC becomes easier.

no fuel cut...i have the PG/mrlilguy pump upgrade
no boost cut....i have a map clamp !!
EBC's are nice only for the ability to make a quick change IMO. me personally i run pretty high levels of boost ALL THE TIME. when i go to the track, thats when i work it up a little here and there. to me that is not worth the extra $150. for someone on a budget i suggest the MBC. i bought it because i still have hopes that one day there will be a better tuning option than all the half assed devices out there now !

There will be later on :) Give it some time. In the meantime I am enjoying my warranty, while letting the other brave (Crazy) folks pioneer the trail.
