tuners worst nightmare

does the white smoke come and go?, yesterday i was sitting at a light and saw a bunch of white smoke around my car i thought it was someonelses but when i pulled a way it looked like it was coming from the back of my car so i pulled in no smoke drove around no smoke i havent ben able to reproduce it so maybe it was someone elses? or does it come and go and then get worse??

Here are all the parts that were replaced on one guy's. I don't know the part # for the original turbo, but I do know it's different than the one shown below.

I found out what the part numbers are on the MS6/ MS3. the numbers depend on the manufacture date of the car, but both the turbos are having problems.

L3R9L3700F (most 06 models, and some 07 models.
L3Y11370Za (replacement for the 06 turbo, and OE for most 07 models)

I've also found that part of the issue might be related to EGTs being a little hotter.

I was also told by the local dealer that they have been instructed not to do any work on the turbos unless the exhaust is stock except for a different muffler. He showed me the email from MNAO. All I can say is be really careful with what you do to these. They are pretty well tuned from the factory.

Some hope I have had though is I switched brand of oil from full synthetic vavloline to Royal purple, and it hasn't had the same amount of smoke.

You can also run you car through a defoul mode. to do this make sure you parking brake is set. Turn all accessories off. leave it in neutral. Press the gas down, and hold the RPMs in the 3500-4000 range for about 2-3 minutes. When it's done the car will return to idle on it's own. When it does take you foot off the gas pedal. By the way make sure you don't have the exhaust blowing on anything. It's going to get really hot.

If anyone has seen GM do it on on the newer duramax with full exhaust done it'll start thing on fire within seconds. Most I've gotten my MS6 to do was burn the hell out of my friend's leg

Part of the problem is also the first cat on the car. it collects a ton of junk in it, and the defoul mode that is supposed to come on during highway drives helps clean it out.

defoul mode? sounds crazy. the things like this make me wonder how many other little things are programmed in the car...

That would explain my erratic P0421 codes I had a few weeks back with my high-flow cat...

Excellent info!! (2thumbs)

P0421 Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

This generally points to a pre-cat malfunctioning. This is the generic OBD2 description, Mazda may have a more specific one (that I don't have access to at this time).

After doing some research with CP-E, we might think it was debris/garbage that was flung onto the cat or sensor... Since I haven't gotten a CEL (knock on wood) in a while, we think it must have cleaned/cleared itself out...

This would explain why:

I thought they weren't smoking with the stock exhaust??

Some owners have experienced smoke with their stock exhaust...
The smoke is still there whether you have the stock exhaust or not. The stock catalytic converters mask the smoke until the seals further degrade...

Jonscapri

when did you buy your MS3 . last year ? what month ? I bought mine at the begining of March 2007 . it smokes on the highway usually when Im going about 65-70 and drop it into 4th to pass people . Just wanted to know if there was a way to tell if I have the newer turbo or the older one and if I need to get it replaced now . I have 24000 miles on her now .

Well...

It's actually a MS6, and it's smoked on and off for the last 10K. When it was cover they couldn't get it to smoke in the shop. It does it occasionally, and i can't even get it to smoke on a consistent basis. From what i have learned about mine, and problem in general with the k04 it's not uncommon.

defoul mode

I was talking to a service advisor about it, and he said that there was one, and how to put it in the defoul mode. Also all the Mazda dealerships are supposed to do it on the turbo model vehicles as part of the quality check.

So I guess if you get rid of the K04 turbo...you get rid of the smoking problem...?

So lets all swap out our turbos!!!! (group)

OK! and can we have we have big nasty ones with teeth and ball bearings and everything please?

Hmm...

Let's think about this rationally. Yes a bigger turbo would be very fun you know something like a PT67 that would actually be rebuildable since it doesn't have ball bearings. , and is just as good as a turbo with ball bearings. Not to mention how big it is for the same price.

On a second note NO ONE has been able to tune our engines wit a bigger turbo successfully.

Considering getting a WRX with a blown motor, and making a monster.
