cracked oil housing...problem...

hey ev1 i was wonderin if i could get some opinions on my situation- a week ago my oil housing cracked n all the oil leaked out of course n i didnt know what was goin on n the car was makin a weird noise n then it jus died cuz obviously there was no oil left in the engine so i blew it-
now...i have warranty on the car still but mazda is tellin me they're not gonna cover it cuz its not a car deffect, n that whoever did the last oil change is responsible for the damage cuz they tightened the oil filter into the housing too tight. so are they right or are they just tryin to get out of it?
cuz i was lookin in some websites n a lot of ppl have had problems with the housing crackin cuz i guess its made of plastic or somethin, i dont know- n someone said that mazda knows about this problem so they added it to their warranty some time ago- so i dont know what to believe or what to do about the car-
help anyone???
thanks!

1) Take it to a different dealer.
2) Don't type like a tool, this isn't a cell phone.

did the dealer do the oil change? if no, then why should they pay for someone else's incompetence? If yes, then they need to fix it.

If a shop did it, they need to own up and be responsible. If you did it, then you now know the importance of having the proper tools and knowledge for the job

There is a special tool that should be used to remove the filter housing. If that tool is not used, the housing is quite often damaged. Go hit up whoever did the oil change, they should be held responsible.

a shop did it n they said that couldnt've been what caused it to crack- theyve been doin my oil changes since i got the car over a yr ago n have never had a problem with that so of course they dont wanna buy me a new engine...

ya i heard bout the tool- i doubt they used it tho...

do you have the reciept of the purchase on the work? take it to a dealer and have the "diagnos " the problem and if they caused the problem the shop HAS to pay for the repairs...thats y i always take my car to mazda..i just like not having to worry about **** ups. and if they do happen, mazda did it not some shmo shop.

- u may need to get a lawyers advice on how to proceed with getting money for this..

ya i have the receipt n i already talked to the owner at the shop but they said that couldntve been the problem so i dont know, i guess i do have to talk to a lawyer but i contacted mazda about my warranty n they asked me to fax them all my receipts for oil changes cuz they wanna make sure i was doin all the maintenance on time n everythin n then i guess from there they will decide if they're gonna cover it or not-

if they dont, have mazda write up a inspection stating that the reason for the problem occuring was what the shop did. then, make a copy...show the owner of the shop and if he refuses, call a lawyer and ask what to do next

anybody got a pic of the tool?
Here's a picture. Be careful, there are several sizes that look kinda like this. If you get it from a Mazda dealer (or one of our sponsors) it will be sure to fit

The shop probably over torqued the oil filter housing. The manual says to torque it to 25-35 Nm. I bet the shop doesn't even own a torque wrench. That's why I don't let anyone work on my car, I don't trust a guy making minimum wage to take care of my stuff.

or go to advance auto .... 14 flute 76 mm (factory is 75.6)

dealer wanted $30-ish, advance was $4.98 and fits like a glove, big key is torque, it doesn't take much and shops are notorious for over-torquing filters. My gf had an older accord and the dumbass who changed the oil didn't put oil on the seal and then used a damned impact wrench to put the filter on. I had to take it off with an 18" pipe wrench.

you are talking about the oil filter cover and not the housing correct?
Isnt the cover the part that comes off along with the filter? The part that uses the oil filter wrench to take off?
Isnt the actual oil filter housing metal?

Well now you know, RED OIL LIGHT= PROBLEM. and as far as not knowing much about that stuff, thats your own stupidity. You know that 2 inch thick stack of paper bound at one end you've been using to seperate your cd's in ur glove compartment, its you manual. Do yourself a favor and READ IT!
