Blowoff valve question

Hey guys, new to the forums, new to owning a nice car...picked up one of the metalic grey 3.5 speeds for a good price, looking to add a few things to it come summer time


First thing id love to put on is a blow off valve. Car is stock minus an aftermarket cold air intake (no clue what brand) and mounted boost gauges.

Any suggestions on what blow off valve i should get? How easy is installation? Is it a do it yourself project? Any other major upgrades ill need to go with the blow off valve?

just any general tips or advise based on expirence would be great, im definitly not a gear head by trade (computer tech), but id like to learn a bit along the way

Assuming you are going to vent to atmosphere, you will most likely run into stalling problems when coming to a stop. Most people have avoided this problem by moving the MAF (mass air flow) sensor from the intake, to right before the throttle body.

The only thing you'd need besides a blow off valve is a metal pipe to be able to move the MAF sensor and mount the blow off valve on.
 
I'm guessing stock intercooler pipes?

I guess that limits you. The one that I know that will fit are TurboXS typeS (used a samco hose to fit to stock pipe as well as my fmic pipe later on) and Forge BOV.

I've had both and love the sound of the type S. I stall rarely. Though my tach does like to dip at stops sometimes. Just add a lot of washers to the type S and you should be ok for the most part.
 
i am running a forge bov kit.. its a dual piston and now that the ecu finally is getting used to the air being vented out, it doesn't want to stall, but like the previous guy said, my tach does like to go down to almost stalling but never does.. you can use it on the stock intercooler piping.. still gives the turkey sound a little bit with stock piping but definitely louder and sounds better than the stock bpv
 
Look into the dual valve set up, if your keeping the MAF in the stock location that is the best way to do it. I had a samco hot pipe with the turbo hoses cold pipe, never had any issues with it. Either that or relocate the MAF to the presure side.

few quick questions, what is the BOV stand for, and as for stock cool air intake pipes, where would i go about getting aftermarket ones? anyone have a link to some?

and a question about the stalling and such...okay so obviously fuel + air + spark = combustion and that of course powers the car, so im assuming the cold air intake brings cold air into the engine, the intercooler (cools down air ??? thats the part thats confusing me, not being a gear head im not sure if its just a glorified fan or not), and the blow off valve clears the engine of used air?

like would the stall be caused because the blow off valve is blowing out too much air and making the air/fuel ratio too weak and causing the engine to stall? i understand perfectly what suggestions you guys are giving me, just want to know the mechanics behind it

BOV stands for blow off valve... (I think thats what your asking?)

cool air intake pipes? as in an AEM or Injen intake or the pipe from the turbo to intercooler? You could call up corksport, protege garage or any other forum vendors for those stuff.

-CAI cold air intake brings cool air into the turbo in our cars yes.
-Intercooler in our car is suppose to cool down air yes.

As for the stalling: when you vent to atmosphere(VTA) : It has something to do with the MAF. I'm not sure. Like it reads the amount of air comming in but when you VTA, it see's some air missing. Sorry not to sure. Do a search on here and I'm sure you'll find a better explaination.

Enjoy the car as much as you can, cause its going to piss you off more than not =)


PS: thats a nice BOV in your link. you'd have to get intercooler hardpipes to make that work though

the reason the motor stalls is one because of a super moody ecu, second would be that the MAF calculates the air that is in the cars system and adjust the fuel accordingly and when the BOV vents it lets some of the air out of the system that has already been calculated into the equation if that makes sence. so in reality when the BOV vents to the air its causing the air fuel ratio to go more to the rich side than the computer intended? i hope you understand this.
 
yup, perfectly, so by mounting the sensor away from its original position would correct the miscalculation?
 
correct, it needs to read the right amount of air so install it after the BOV and about 6inches away if you can. i dont know if it really matters but people say its nice to keep it away from the turbulance created by the BOV.

Its kinda hard to explain, first u get the kkhhhhaaaaaahhhhh sound then a pppssssttttttt kinda sound. its so hard to type and explain sounds!
 
^^ yeah thats about how mine sounds as well.. its definitely louder than stock but i get a combo of the turkey sound and bov sound.. oh well, i like the sound and looks better than stock
