CHEAP 240sx Project!

Alright, I've finally gotten around to work on the car a bit so I'll finally make a thread to show the progress.

The car : 1989 Nissan 240sx SE
The purchased price : $400 with a spare KA24E engine!

I got a 350 small block from a 1974 corvette for free.
I'm not sure if I'm going to use it for the project as it needs a rebuild.
Parts are cheap as a ramen dinner for any chevy engine though.

Plans for now
-Strip everything (remove engine/trans, interior, suspension, etc)
-sand blast it down to bare metal
-Seam/stitch weld the entire chassis
-$50 paint job!
-decide the final engine/transmission combo
-custom coilovers : ebay coilover sleeves + adj. struts welded together
-race tires
-Sell both KA24E engines, aluminum wheels, interior
-fab lexan windows
-weld the rear differential

I know you guys LOVE the spoiler. (yupnope)

Today I started on the $50 paint job.

2 quarts of Rustoleum "Gloss Sunrise Red"
1 can of Rustoleum automotive primer
1 gallon of paint thinner
1 can of bondo
1 can of Aircraft paint stripper
1 4" high density paint roller w/ plenty of extra rollers
paint tray
misc foam brushes
painters tape

I swear that hood lost 20lbs. by taking off the 20 layers of paint and bondo.

oh damn look at you building a GRM car now...just hope you dont feel bad when i beat you lol j/k

good luck though and just remember nothing is for frizzle.

my question is how that thing attached, it looks like it would snap off at anything above 20mph

Subbing! I look forward to competing with you this fall! :) Good luck, Chris :).

It seems as though there will be at least 3 M247 members at the Challenge next year (all from the ATL area).

That is awesome! I've been talking about doing a GRM car for a while. I'm either going to do a BMW e30 or a 240sx.

E30 + V8. That is all.

That is right or a V8 swap into a 318ti. I have a couple of customers that have done V8 conversions to e30s and a few e36s. To bad M3 motors are to expensive to run in the GRM challenge because I do have a low mileage (98 M3) s52 motor, harness, and 5-speed trans that I could use.

I really dig that car, are you going to keep it 2 tone?

Btw the wing suits it wtf?
Yeah. It'll be 2-tone.
The top will be black and the rest of the car will be a bright red.
The tint will stay on the car and I'll slap whatever wheel/race tire set up I can get.

Don't worry, I already ripped it off. :D
It had 2 angle brackets with wood screws holding it on.

I'm pondering whether or not to raise the spoiler 3 feet in the air in the same fashion to get more horsepower.

Hopefully everything will be done by then, if not I'll finally have a dedicated autox car until next year.

Sweet! That mean you'll finally make it out to a couple events this year? :p
I may also start bringing a trailer out to the event to sell racing jacks, jack stands, and cordless impacts.
I still need to contact someone in the Atl SCCA to see if there are any vendor fees.
(One of my managers has a business license that may or may not be needed)

i here ya thats the hardest part of this whole build is finding cheap parts. i got lucky with todd selling his r-comps and i found some sucker on ebay selling a set of koni yellows and ebay coilovers for uber cheap

PM knowcones (Heyward) or BigB (Brian). I don't know if they have any final say, but they can at least point you in the right direction :D

It'll be a slow moving thread as I only have 2 hours a week to dedicate to the project until summer.

I hear ya. I was just wondering if you were able to do anything else. I do not even have time for my project. A 85 Camaro IROC-Z.

Sub! I want to do a cheap car for the hell of it. Is this a competition or something for a cheap build-up?
