cat-delete+CAI+Smog test= ******?

:
2005 Mazda 3 2.3
how do i pass a smog test (which is necessary every two years in the state of california) without taking off my cat-delete and replacing the stock CAI every time??

you wont... >_> unless your buddy buddy with they guy whos smogging your car.

im putting my car back to stock when i go to smog.

You wont have to smog it for the first 5 yrs.. Than its every 2 after that.

If you get a test pipe, you can plop the stock piece in for smog. The CAI is smog legal, otherwise, mazda wouldnt be able to offer installation the part. So, dont sweat it.

are you sure the CAi is smog legal? any kind?

I think only the MS CAI is legal..... and AFAIK its only legal on the 07s - tell me how much that makes sense

the reason for it is because the other companies don't pay the extra $$ to get it certified because, really, if you're modding your car, chances are using only legal mods is not your priority

If he bought the car new then yeah it's every 5 yrs but if it was a used car then he'll have to do smog every 2. I think the smog thing is just for the first time with the new cars then it's every 2 after that. I got lucky, I thought I was going to do smog this yr but I have until next yr to do mine.

Correct. I bought a used Mazda3 sport 2.3 manual so I will be smogged every two years and I don't wanna take my car apart every time I go in for a smog test. So the MazdaSpeed CAI will pass smog? How about the MS cat back exhaust? If this is the case, I work at a Ford dealership detailing cars and Ford owns Mazda so I can get heavily discounted prices on MazdaSpeed parts.

sry, don't know much about the reg 3 I assumed ms3

I would guess they'd be the same tho... the CBE won't do anything because its all after the cats. I would guess the intake would be approved, best way is to ask your parts guy

with a bad or no cat in cali. you will show up as a gross polluter.
my buddy was showing that on his car here in cali. old cat. Put in a new cat onyl diffrence and passed.

no cat on your car is an instant fail. (plus a as much as a $3,000 fine in cali) also its illegal to pull your cat off before 80,000 miles. If it has faield before that. Then a mechanic has to uninstall it and install a new one. And emission parts are covered for 50,000 miles in cali by law. (and safety equiptment like belts and stuff)

so basically the intake might be legal if it has a cert number on it then you shoudl eb good. GO to DMV website and there is a list of every legal intake in california for every car.

CBE is fine its after cats. only thing you cna be hit with on that is noise by cops.!

the MS cai is made by AEM, therefore its 50 state carb legal.

and i was told that directly by the parts guy at one of my local mazda dealership. they even had for sale a speed 3 with mazdaspeed parts on it, so there was no it wasnt carb legal. what would they expect you to do? buy a stock intake for the MS cai they installed?

as long as your catted youll be fine. by friend barely passed smog with his integra with his 160 i think on the clock, and those only have a 1 cat.

I'm in New Mexico, Bernalillo county requires used cars to be checked every 2 years. I went to get my car checked recently; the guy at the emissions testing place just plugged into the computer port thing (OBDII?), ran the engine at 2500 RPMs for 30 seconds or so, and handed me my certificate. It was exactly $17.

I asked him about after market exhausts, he said that so long as I can keep my CEL light off I'd be fine.

... maybe you can find a shop that operates in a similar fashion.

A CAI will never cause you to fail Smog. The test pipe or cat delete will, this is why I went with a test pipe as I can replace it when the time comes.

some states are like that. its not like that in california, they sniff test here. they measure how much carbon your car releases.

But I thought CAI's had to be emissions legal which i understood as smog legal.. I would like to get an F5 CAI but it isn't emissions legal.. wouldn't that cause me to fail my smog test?

I thought NM was like smog free outside Albq? I hear they have some wicked ass turbo cars out there. My buddy moved there last yr and was bragging about it. Although, the high elevation kinda puts a damper on real power.

It will fail the visual due to the IAT sensors location in CA and the fact its outside of the airbox if not CARB legal. Lame ass laws.

Werd! It shouldn't matter what is in the engine bay as long as what comes out the muffler is good er good enough...
