i have a problem with my 01' mp3 and need help desperatly. heres what happend 1st i had the CEL light on solid and had my friend check it for me with his code reader and showed us the bottom o2 sensor is bad. i did remember replacing the top one a month before but forgot to change the bottom one till this day. so i drove back home on the freeway, then my car started to act up and kind of sputtering(speed kinda drop down and wont accelerate). so i pulled up at the next exit and parked at the autozone. smoke came out and it smelled bad. checked under the car and u can see clearly that the bottom o2 sensors went completly out because the smoke came out from it. i pulled it out and it was dark and no good. got me a new cheap one that i have to splice a rig to make the plug fit. finally install it in then i start up my car..... the CEL was blinking but i didnt thaught iti was a big of a deal so i drove home a couple miles later the car started to act up again but no smell and wasnt that bad of a sputter... please someone help me with this problem im super new to this........

ok i had my friend diagnose my CEL with his code reader and it show multiples misfire code p0300. his opinion was that it might be the coils and/or spark plugs went out. then we try to pull the plugs out while car is running and everything seems to be fine(car shakes and act up) meaning its still good.so we googled the code and some dude was having the same problem and had his car serviced at the mazda dealer. they had replace his coils, spark plugs n wires, egr, emission parts etcs etcs. same problem and code occured so then they finally replaced the CAT and no code this time. some other code showed up. i guess he had one problem fixed and another one pops up...... so frustrated can someone give me some help or there opinion on whats the for sure thing to fix. thank you

your friend is an idiot who pulls out a spark plug while the car is running? replace your coil packs thats causing the miss fire. and since it wasnt a big deal to drive your car while the check engine light was flashing i can bet money you ruined your precat which is the rotten egg smell you were probly smelling. but being in california the only pre cat you can get is from mazda which runs $1,000

what color was the smoke?

it was white smoke and godddddaaaaaaam 1k for a pre-cat fuuuuuuuuuck so theres nowhere else i can get a pre-cat here in california?????????

if to say i bought the coils n it fix my missfire would the car still hesitate becuase of the bad pre-cat??? i know its gonna throw another code if i did fix the missfire..... help me out with some more guys..........

If you had white smoke its a possibility your headgasket is gone as well an o2 sensor will not make the car smoke.the pre cat being bad won't cause hesitation. What you could do is do the non fouler trick which is illegal but it won't throw a code and the main cat works well enough to pass a sniffer.mazda is the only place you can get a precat to be legal in ca

I had a random multiple cylinder misfire at one time so I replaced my coils plugs and wires and it fixed that problem. If you drove with a misfire for awhile its gonna send a lot of unburnt fuel through and that will clog up your cat as it did mine. I did the non fouler trick and havent had a code for the cat since. That was about 3 years ago. Give it a shot and see what happens. Only takes a few minutes and will run you less than 10 bucks

Search for it on the forum there's a thread labled "how to non fouler" or somewhere in there or look in the how to section

YES!!!!!!!!!!! i think i fixed it, but had a vacuum leak which threw a p0106 found and fixed it(one of the vacuum house from the egr boost sensor on the top passenger side next to strut bar) thanks to my fellow mp3 members who helped me. if any more problems in the future ill definetly come back here. you guys are better help than any of my friends. again THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO MORE CEL

I am sure what he means is he removed the spark plug wire from the spark plug end while the car was running. If there is no difference in how the engine runs when you do this it tells you that its not firing anyway.

You realize there is voltage going through the spark plug wires and without thick enough gloves it will shock the s*** out of you right? So basicly still not smart

If you have a screwdriver in your hand when you do it YEAH. Otherwise highly unlikely. Unless your plug wires are cracked and have bare spots and of that's the case you dont have to pull on them...touch them period and you'll get a shock. But typically that's not the case. Especially when it comes to coil packs. That's about the ONLY upside to coil packs in my opinion.

Side note...Responding to old threads is not an issue here as they may still be useful/informative to people searching for related information.

Let's keep threads on topic please, thanks.
