Low Fuel Light

I wondered how far forum members have driven with the fuel light on. Last night on the way home from a long trip I had my light on for 37 miles and the fuel gauge was reading below the E, so I decided not to test it and I filled up. I only put in 13.8 gallons after driving 394 miles (28.5 mpg), so I was a little mad knowing that I could easily have made it 20 more miles home and still had fuel in the tank (15.9 gallon capacity plus) to spare. I probably would have tested it further, but I had the family in the car and didn't want to risk running out.

Yes, it will go further, but it is best not to test it too much.

My rule of thumb, so that I have a safe buffer zone, is that I have 2 gallons left to use when the light goes on, which for me equals ~50 miles.

I have gone farther, (Needle pointing below E, below the E-LINE, and instead at the triangle that shows you what side your tank is on), but I hate the extra anxiety it brings. (boom01)

I have about 5 gals left when the light comes on. My "miles left to go" gauge (display) says 0 miles till empty when my low fuel light comes on. still leaving me with a comfortable 5 gals left.

The entire gas tank situation on mine is weird and very hard to conclusively determine anything, BUT I have estimated and found it to be fairly accurate that there are 3.5 gallons left when the light comes on. That's based on what goes in when I fill up, which of course is always different, but it averages 3.5.

Somethings not right here, your low fuel light comes on when you have almost a half tank??? the 5 does not have a "miles left to go" gauge (display) just a trip computer. it would be nice to have this feature but we don't

I'm guessing your posting in the wrong forum!

each time my low fuel light has come on I have about 2 gallons left in the tank (based on the fill up volume)

Only 9 posts for the owner of the 99 Protege'. Cut him/her some slack. I spent some time at the P5 site when I first joined the forum, so I know how it feels to be in the wrong place without knowing it.

5 gals a the low fuel light seems too large a buffer zone for getting to the nearest gas station, though.

BTW, I have driven 90 km/56 miles with the yellow light glowing. Filled up at 680km/425 miles.
