Hybrid.....I think NOT!!

Just got this off CNN......

WEST MEMPHIS, ARKANSAS (WMC) - A car belonging to a West Memphis doctor exploded this morning when he got into the car according to West Memphis Police.
This happened at 8 a.m. at Doctor Trent Pierce's home on North Avalon Street and West Cooper Avenue in West Memphis.
Pierce has been airlifted to the Med in Memphis in extremely critical condition according to West Memphis Police Chief Bob Paudert.
Police are not sure what happened, but right now they do not believe foul play is involved.
The car was a Lexus hybrid. (uhm)
Dr. Pierce is a family doctor who specializes in asthma.
He is also the Chairman of the Arkansas State Medical Board.
He is married and has two children.
Dr. Pierce has been in private practice since 1983.

The car didn't even blow up, just the front end is torn apart. I don't understand wtf happened. The bumper is hanging and they're claiming he's in critical condition. How did it even happen?

So what is worse for the environment the batteries or the worse emissions from a non-hybrid???

My friend has a Prius and loves it. Bought it like 4 years ago and has zero problems with the batteries.

That's a good question.........I would think that disposing of those batteries would be an issue going forward as we get more and more hybrids on the roads. As for longevity, ask your friend what it's going to cost him/her to replace the batteries when they die. I think it may be easier/cheaper to scrap the car or replace the hybrid engine with a normal engine (drinks)

My guess would that even when you factor in the batteries, Hybrids are way better for the environment... when you take into account the less gasoline it uses and fewer emissions throughout the life of the vehicle.

one dude on the prius forums, had his 1st gen up to 350k miles without replacing the batteries. the only reason why he got rid of the car was because it was hit by a drunk driver. i guess we should start seeing how the batteries last pretty soon under normal circumstances.

yup... people just look at "carbon footprint" and don't look at other pollutions from the hybrid...

This article was based on a report done by a Marketing Company with wacky assumptions like the life of the H3 is 300,000 miles, the Prius 100,000. I've read the report and it leaves a lot out.

Most likely there is a reason your reading that as an opinion piece from the student newspaper of the Central Connecticut State University.

Oh, yeah, Sudbury, Ontario was supposed to be real bad in the 80's, it's supposedly doing much better now. Our Canadian friends would probably know first hand.
