Headed to the LLWS in a Mazda5

I just rented a Mazda5 Sport from Hertz and will be leaving for Williamsport, PA tomorrow morning. I'll have a 1200 mile round-trip, 16 hour test drive and I'm looking forward to it.

FWIW, Hertz classifies the Mazda5 as an Intermediate.

eilros25,

I played in the LLWS in 1984. It's an awesome time, I've been there 5 or 6 times since. I plan on taking my son there next year for the 25th anniversary of making it there.

what trim does Hertz carry? I'd guess the Sport since most rental places don't tend to carry the upper trim lines. Maybe I'll see if I can borrow one next time I take my MS3 in for service.

Hertz usually has Tourings, As per Enterprise, I've seen both Sports and Tourings...

I put on 1143 miles three days and enjoyed the ride. Here are a few thoughts (I may add more later as I think of stuff):

1) Great MPG - I averaged 30.11 for the trip driving 70-75 on Interstate.

2) Lots of room - I had the back seats folded down and was able to get the stroller, bags, lawn chairs, etc in the back with plenty of room left over.

3) Legroom was fine - I'm 6'4" and had more than enough legroom. The telescopic steering wheel helped a lot. My wife is 5'4" and she really like the seat height adjustment.

4) Smooth ride - I was impressed with the smoothness of the ride, even over some very bumpy road construction.

5) Comfy seats - They are firm but not too hard. They could use a little more lumbar support though.

6) Auto climate control is awesome

7) Needs more storage areas - A front console would be very nice.

8) Audio system sucked - I've never driven a vehicle with a worse audio system. The rear speakers are virtually worthless and the front ones aren't much better.

9) Lots of road noise when sitting in second row - It was pretty quiet sitting in the front seats but the road noise was very high when sitting in the second row. It sounded like a window was cracked open but it wasn't. It was very annoying. This issue could be a deal breaker. My wife was not impressed with the noise.

I admire your persistence and patience on test driving a Mazda5, this is a very complete report (cool)

I guess you've seen it all here in the Mazda5 forum so I won't comment on your list, but my question is: What other cars are you considering? I'm curious because it has been 3 years since I purchased the first MZ5 (with its pros and its cons) and I'm yet to find a comparable car (scratch) I could replace the Mazda5 with (especially at the price vs. value, as stated by fam earlier).

Once I find that car it will be on my list to replace the 06 :D

So how was the Series????

It was absolutely awesome!! I'm definitely going back but will stay for a few days next time. The games weren't very competitive but the atmosphere was great.

It had to be a blast to play there in 1984. You're accomplishment is even greater than those that make it today.

We really want a vehicle with sliders so that limits our options. We really like the size of the Mz5 and the way it drives. We're still seriously considering the Mz5 but plan to drive another to see if the road noise is the same.

Our other option would be to upsize into a MPV, Sienna or Ody.

Even though i would personally never do it, me co worker just got a new caravan with stow and go, automatic doors and hatch, ambient lighting, swivelling seats, a crap load of room, tinted windows, mp3 player all for 20 thousand exactly. After all the current discounts. I think the sticker was 26 or so.

It was so much fun playing there. It was a tough road. Almost entirely single-elimination play...none of that round-robin stuff you see now. The kids now have to play a lot more games to get there, but can get past a bad day or loss in pool play. We had to go undefeated to get there. We lost 3 close games (Indiana...coincidence, Panama, and Belgium), and Jason Varitek was on the FL team that lost to South Korea in the finals...also...if the sale of my car goes through Sunday, I will be driving my new Mazda5 on Monday...

Yeah, I hear you, sliding doors rock. Never driven an Odyssey but yes for the other 2, real decent cars. I got an 05 MPV as a loaner during the Mazda5 exhaust recall (6-7 weeks) and it is a nice driver at cruise speed (6cyl, 5AT), problem is gas on both, but hey, space is good...

As per the LLWS, once the little one is older I guess I'll have no excuse to not going there, I live in PA and we do love baseball after all (bump)

Bump for eilros25 if still around, what did you end up buying if I can ask? (naughty)
