Doh! I forgot to downshift...

Was heading up to the mountains with my wife for the week when my cruise control cut off while I was doing 60. Granted, it was raining, and I did just drive over a puddle, so I pressed the has pedal and...nothing. The rpm's didn't climb, the speed started lowering, I started freaking.

First thought was that I fried the clutch, so I checked for the obvious signs. Downshifted no problem, no clutch chatter, rpm's climbed in accordance with the speedometer. Then it hit me, I'm going up hill in 5th in an underpowered wagon. Tossed it down to 3rd then 4th and voila! The 5 took off like a charm.

Gotta remember this doesn't have the torque of my Crossfire. Live and learn.

I forgot to do this once as I was crossing through Arizona and was gaining elevation. I am a flatlander and the car was new (1990 Honda civic) and a semi was bearing down on me and I had the cruise on. I could not tell what was happening...all I know is the semi driver was not happy with me. Finally, I got a clue and downshifted and got out of the way...I never did that again.
