big 3

I was planning on doing what i thought was an easy wiring upgrade, "Big 3" Have a 2004 mazda 6s, and it looks like the alternator doesnt run a 6 or 8 gauge wire to the battery, it looks like it has a wire harness that connects to it... is that true? So how would I replace/upgrade the wire...
