ZR-1 laps Nurburgring in 7:26

NURBURG, Germany During testing this week at the Nrburgring Nordschleife, the supercharged 638-horsepower Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 turned a lap of 7:26.4, quicker than the 7:29 set on April 16-17 by the Nissan GT-R, which is believed to be the lap record for a mass-produced sports car. Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer, says, "The vehicle is exactly like the cars that will be built in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and sold around the world later this summer."

The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has been testing at the Nrburgring over the last two weeks for final tuning before production begins later this summer. Development engineer Jim Mero drove the test car. Juechter reports, "Jim commented after the lap that conditions were good except for a strong headwind down the main straight and that the lap was solid, but he felt there were a few places he could have gone faster."

Just as with the recent Nrburgring attempt with the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V, the GM development team made some efforts to ensure the car remained scrupulously stock. Though it featured a bar to locate a seatbelt harness, there was no roll cage to reinforce chassis rigidity. The ride height and chassis alignment were stock, the emissions gear met EPA standards and there was pump gas in the tank. The Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires have been developed for production, although they did carry a relatively soft tread-wear rating of 220.

Juechter notes, "The timed lap was run with a rolling start, a departure from our previous practice of standing starts. This is more aligned with current industry practice. The lap was electronically timed and confirmed with two handheld stopwatches."

An in-car video of the lap will be available after the Fourth of July holiday.

What this means to you: That sound you hear is the Nissan engineers loading a GT-R into a truck and heading for the Nrburgring. Michael Jordan, Executive Editor, Inside Line

Why?

The ZR1 is bound to cost 10-20k more than the GT-R.

The GT-R is a better value.

The GT-R is a better value.

Screw that on this case, a Corvette is a Corvette :D.

No but seriously, for those car segments and at those prices (80k-100k) I don't really see buyers thinking about more bang for the money (money is not an issue in other words)

I love stiff competition so hearing news like this makes me feel as though they'll just keep raising the bar. When that bar is raised, technology (and power) trickles down to lessers cars that are more affordable which means everyone wins.

Even if I could afford a 100k, I don't think I would. It's a car...I would rather build a hotrod in my garage for half the price that would look way cooler than either of these cars could muster.

That said, I still LOVE the Corvette and would consider the regular model which I have priced out at around 50k on the Chevy site. Not too bad for a monster of a car.

We will have to see what the Acura NSX and the updated 911 Turbo will run the ring at.

How do you figure? Its the bench mark track to test at. Tight curves and long straights, it has everything, and at 15 plus miles its an endurance lap. The car needs to be at the top of its game to run a good all lap there. And at the other end of the spectrum theres the Tsukuba Circuit that like a mile and half.

I think he could prob still cut off another 2-3 seconds based on what they were saying. And on the Carrera S cut off 8 seconds off it's lap from last years model (dual clutch ftw, even though I prefer manual.)

it's funny how that argument didn't seem to carry any weight for the Z06 ;) (which would still be my choice over either the nissan or the ZR-1).

V-SPEC.

that will be a true comparison, imho.

i wonder if i could get a job at a nissan dealership and work my way up to top salesman and trusted employee AND then take a v-spec AND THEN run for the border. if what is being said about the gt-r v-spec is true, i could run 12 parsecs and no one could stop me!

(five-0)(gun)

I'd much rather have the GT-R. Of course my demographic is based upon style and uniqueness rather than raw power and performance so you have to take that into account as with all people and circumstances.

Same. Rarely used to hear about it, espicially not with any American car companies. Now everybody wants to brag about their Nrburgring times... :(
