will these tires fit on my 2008 hatchback?

i have old rims from my passat 225/45 R17 91H......will they fit my 2008 hatchback?

and if not could someone explain why so i can learn?

Volkswagon wheels do not fit Mazda's as for two reasons. VW's either have 5x100 or 5x112 lug patterns as the Mazda has 5x114.3 Also the hub bore on VW's is 57.1mm where Mazda's is 67.1. So no the wheels will not fit.
