whining noise, I don't mean my wife

I just installed a Kicker amp and some Boston speakers in my P5/2003, now I'm getting a whining nosie that revs with my engine. I hear it most when the radio is playing but I can also hear it(slightly) when a CD is playing. What is it and how can I get rid of it, thanks.

A ground loop noise, or alternator whine. I'm struggling to completely eliminate it in my car as well.

It is very hard to solve with only a little information, but you need good ground connections, good RCAs, the RCA cable(s) should be "far" away from the power wire. If it is minor, a ground loop noise suppression device will work (Monster Cable makes a pretty decent one, but it isn't the cheapest - I think it is about $40). However, it will not remove the noise if it is really noticeable.

Sorry I can't be more help. Otherwise, if you have plenty of power, turn the gain down on the amplifier. That will help tremendously (but of course means you get less volume). Decks with high (4V or more) preouts help as well. Don't know what you have for a deck.

A few things to check on the amp install:

1st) Did you run your RCAs on the opposite side of the car as your power cable?
2nd) Do you have a good ground for the amp? Did you scrape off any paint? Did you use a locking washer (one with little prongs on it)?

Also, do you have an aftermarket head unit? If you do, did you notice the sound before you added the amp? Do you have the unit properly grounded with the supplied ground cable? If you're positive you get the sound while listening to CDs, disconnect the antenna from the back of the head unit and see if you still hear it. If you don't then you will need a antenna isolator. If the unit doesn't turn on, then you forgot to ground it and you were grounding it through the antenna.

Added to the grounding info chuyler1 mentioned.
It needs to be short and to primary body metal not a suppot race the rear deck or the trunk lid :D damn that would be funny!
Also the ground wire needs to be crimped to a ring teminal and then screwed or bolted to the floor of the car!
That crimp needs to be done very well. You should not be able to pull of the ring terminal without a butt load of force!

Sorry to hear that you had that damn engine noise too! I used to have it really bad. My husband did something...he's the audio man...and now it is gone and I dont miss that s*** one bit! I'll have to get him to read the post and let you know. Later.

Thanks for the replies, I have a Pioneer premeir 640 head. and I had it installed at one shop then later had the speaker and amp installed at another shop. All supposibly profesionally done. When the head unit was installed there was no noise, I didn't hear anything until I added the speakers/Amp. Is this something the shop should fix for free because it sounds like a bad install.

You should definately take it to the shop that installed it, if it's half decent they will gladly fix it.

Yep if it has noise its on the shop to get rid of it or give you your money back!

Also, tell them that their installer obviously didn't test the install when he was finished, because otherwise he would have noticed the sound and corrected the problem, or at the very least told you about it.

99% of the time its either the RCAs being to close to the power cable, or the ground cable not being properly secured. You should never run RCAs parallel with Power. If you must cross the cables, do so at a 90 degree angle.

However, sometimes it has nothing to do with your own work. Sometimes, in older cars, there is a ground loop due to bad factory wiring. In that case, you may want to bypass the chassis ground all together and run a ground cable right to the battery.

Also, some amps reject noise better than others. I'm not saying that Kicker is a bad brand, but the same setup with the same wiring could yield better results with a different amp. I've seen it happen before. So if you can't figure it out, go back to the store and ask them to hook up another amp (even another of the same model) and see if they can eliminate the sound.

my MSP stock system has a little whine to it also
Unless the radio is malfunctioning then that is impossible as there is no amp for the speakers, just the head unit.
