Where to vacation in Central America?

Hello everyone,

In trying to overcome my 'Winter Blues' (Toronto, Canada) me and my gf are planning a March getaway someplace in Central America. Places of interest include Costa Rica, Venezuela, Hondurus, Panama and Colombia. I have never been to any of these places b4 and have no real preference, though my gf has some issues with safety, in particular Colombia.
We are not looking to do the Mexico/Cuba/Dominican/Carribean scene as we are just looking to 'relax' (nana)

Any suggestions? warnings? places to avoid? I was looking forward to Colombia myself (shrug)

Costa Rica is nice. I've been twice for Christmas and it was fun. Also if you like jungle tours or water sports it's fabulous. Also nice people as one of it's major industries is tourism.

Costa Rica is very nice, according to all the brochures i've been flippin through (cool) i'm planning on doing the all inclusive thing, though there are numerous tour packages available, as I'm looking to relax mainly and be pampered... Greg do you remember the resort/place you stayed at?

thx

Iv'e always wanted to see the Panama Canal, and go to Costa Rica. Enjoy your trip!!

ive been to costa rica 2x and cannot wait to go back again. the big cities there are cool, but venture out to the small towns and make sure you vist La Fotuna, lots of cool stuff round there, active volcanoes, hotsprings resorts, huge waterfalls, crazy stuff. Then go to one of the beachs and enjoy the snow white sand and oh so blue water. I could go on and on....

I'm going to Jamaica next month for 7 days all inclusive, super pampered and a lot of activities. I also went to the Dominican Republic for 5 days all inclusive as well in December and it was very relaxing, food kinda sucked but who could complain with 85 degree in winter. Good luck Pappi.

Worst statement EVAR!!!!!!!!!!11

I took a vaction in Mexico once, and stayed at the most beautiful, peaceful, quiet, relaxing resort I have ever been to (and I have travelled nearly everywhere). Juat a little piece of advice to you...don't hate on Mexico, it's not as bad and dirty as you may think! It is also quite inexpensive to travel there...

cool, thx for the heads up...we decided on Central America, as my gf is well travelled (ugh) and would like to try some new destination (i.e. other than Mexico & Carribean) ... i'm not hating on any place at all (glare)

As it is March I would like to avoid the chaos (and ppl watching (confused) when with my wifey) of Spring Break, yet don't want to spend too much money on an exclusive resort...our thinking is Central America provides the exclusivity w/o the $$$... right now any place, minus the snow, is good.

ok my two cents...and ive been to a few diff countries...ive been to mexico good and bad parts...mexico is fun acapulco is nice but more city and is really big now compared to what it was a few years ago...id say go to ixtapa. it is a nice under developing area which i love, its classy clean and very very beautiful lots to do there since they have their own little town and resorts and the like id say go there because they have beautiful beaches the ocean is right next door and its just incredible.

i was born in venezuela i havent been there in like 4-5 years which sucks since yeah...but then again ive lived all my life in the usa so it kinda doesent bother me much but id still like to visit. i dont know id say venezuela really isnt a hot spot right now seeing as how there are government issues (chavez) and crime has gone up...like i said i havent been there recently but ive been told there is more mugging now and more crime but then again ive been told its kinda the same as before. columbia well i havent been there since like...5-6 years and ive only been there once. personally i loved it it was nice, beautiful cold at times, im speaking about bogota of coarse, and the roads are straight nice culture and many cultural things to do...salt mines i beleive if i remember correctly. i likes columbia a lot. about venezuela i wouldnt discourage you too much since that somewhat crime is in caracas the capitol, but there are many different towns to visit margarita, islands off of venezuela now that i would recomend nice beautiful warm weather and nice beach's as well. there are many different places you can go to have fun in venezuela i beleive there is the biggest water fall in south american in the jungle somewhere in venezuela, i forget where exactly. i had a friend go there one time and he said it was amazing except there were so many mosquitoes(sp?) and the like. i personally want to go back to venezuela sometime and see how things are cause i sorta miss the culture and food and what not. it cant compare to the states i guess but idk ive lived here my whole life. if you have any other questions feel free to pm me i will do my best to answer them or i can ask my parents and theyl probably know. best of luck and have a fun safe trip.

(note about safety in south/central america it depends on where you go and what you do like anywhere in the world so keep this in mind. its like saying "i dont want to get mugged but i lets take a road trip through the ghetto and hope not to get robbed" not trying to say anything about ghettos and what not just common sense stuff. pretty much, to me, all places have been safe ive had no safety issues but enjoy your vacation and make the best of it)

Sorry, no idea where I stayed, it's been at least 15-20 years since I went. The wife and kids and I are actually going ot go to Australia this September for my Grandfather's 90th birthday. Sort of figure he should be able to see his great-grandchildren at least once and it gives me an excuse to see all my aunts, uncles and cousins again. Also we just went to Japan to see my wife's family last year so it's time to swap countries. As you might guess we do a lot of traveling outside of the US, I always have since I was a little kid with my parents and just sort of kept it up over the years, and my wife has always traveled off the beaten path as an adult. I think the only continent we haven't been to is Africa, might have to go some time soon.(cool)

from what i've seen as a sailor:

Mexico: Veracruz, pretty nice

Venezuela: Maracaibo, also very nice, brought back an excellent strawberry wine named Maribel....

Slightly O\T: Greg: for africa, Cape Town is a must....

i think i shall go to venezuela for spring break...bwahaha i havent been there in a while and ill let you all know how it goes...or if im actually going
