I was wondering if there are any places online to get factory parts like the rear deck/ cargo cover that hangs down from the hatch? Or if anyone has one that they would like to sell to me? Lemme know. Thanks

Once upon a time I had a Tercel without the cover and the dealers wanted something obscene for it, if memory serves, it was $350 and that was in 1989. No way. So I bought a bit of carpet remnant, glued it onto a piece of pressboard (that stuff with the holes in it that is used for hanging tools behind a workbench). It sat on top of two spring loaded curtain rods which fit nicely into the mounting holes on each side of the trunk area. Total cost was about $15 and it only took about half an hour to put it together. From the top (and outside the car) it looked really nice.

My point being that if you can't find one cheap you can probably build something that will work just as well with little effort and for not much money. To modify my "design" (it hardly merits the term) to fit a P5 cut the underboard into two parts and run two strings through the posterior half to the screws in the hatch. Then yours will open with the hatch just like the real thing. Take a good luck at the trunk and see what the mounting holes are like, if you're lucky you can just screw some little bits onto the underboard and fit it into place and not have to resort to the curtain rod approach. If you do that you may need to screw a stiffener onto the bottom of each panel, or use slightly thicker wood, so that it won't sag in the middle.

^^^ That's a great idea. Plus, if you took it a step further and put some soundproofing material on it (like underlay beneath the carpet, or whatever) I bet it would quiet the noises coming from the hatch.... Like the groaning body...

There's a heavy vinyl material available that should work for this. The stuff weighs about 1 lb per square foot and really cuts down on transmitted noise. It's available at different prices, under different names, from a variety of sources, but here's one example:

So if you do experiment with this maybe run it down behind the back seats too. There's a variant of this stuff with embedded fibers for hanging applications, but I'm guessing that the normal vinyl should be strong enough to hang the two feet or so needed to cover the backs of the rear seats.

Warning - the stuff doesn't smell too good when it's fresh off the roll and it can take a while for the smell to dissipate. It might also stink when it's warm, for instance, in a hot car. I've only ever used it indoors.

There's probably a better material to use in a car, I just don't know what it is.
