When did the Mazda3 come out with the 5 speed auto option?

So this is the boyfriend and I'm looking to buy a mazda3.

My budget so far only lets me look at 2004/05. So far, they have all been basic to GT, around 120-170,000k. The big thing I need to know is when did mazda3's come out with the 5speed auto, and what years? I've heard some things that are not great about the 4speed auto mazda3's.

I would really appreciate some information about 4speed vs 5speed (besides the obvious of more gears is better performance so that the RPM's stay lower per shift.) I need to know about any issues the 4speed has had because I was advised by a mechanic friend to stick with the 5speeds only.

I've yet to find any 5speed 2004-2005's.

My old '06 was an 5 speed auto. I think the SP 2.3s were 5 speed autos too.
