wheel offset and wheel width

Okay, a lot of wheel discussion goes right over my head, but maybe someone can help me figure this out.

First, I'm not interested in changing the handling of my car; I think Mazda did a great job and I don't want to mess it up. Basically, I've been looking at changing wheels to something lighter, but with the same offset, diameter, and width.

I know the stock offset is +55, but I also know that if you change the width of the wheel, the offset needs to change, too--if you want everything to stay roughly the same. Is there a way to figure out what the "correct" offset should be for a 7.5" wheel? An online calculator would be awesome!

Two related questions: How close is close enough when you're discussing offset? If I went with a wider wheel, what other considerations do I need to weigh?

Thanks!

Well the other thing to consider is weight. Wider wheels are usually heavier. It may not make a difference to you, but I would be hesitant to buy a heavy wheel even if I loved it. Wheel Weight DOES make a difference.

Just to correct you on a few things. Our stock wheels are a 17*7 with a 50mm offset. This is 100% accurate as I have personally checked it myself.
Hope this helps.
Oh ,BTW,You cannot fit anything on a protege wider than a 7.5 without modifications.
Hope this helps out

Stock offset is +55mm. Enkei cast this number into the wheel on the backside of one of the spokes. Don't take my word for it. Look at the back of your wheels.
And, yes, it is "Enkei" cast on the back of the wheel spoke, not Racing Hart.

Well i don't know about your wheels but mine say enkei and they also have the offset of 50 mm stamped on the back of them.
Wierd,I did personally look a long time ago when I was having custom wheels made.
For those of you who don't know,Enkei makes a lot of factory wheels and this is also how they started out as a company many ,many years ago. They used to only make wheels for foctory apps for the different motor companies long before they went to aftermarket applications.

This is interesting. I wonder if there is a different offset for the 03.5's

I have an 03 and my offset seems to be 55.

I just bought new wheels with an offset of 50 and they wouldn't clear the brake caliper.

hmmm......

17" wheels offset

Im thinking about buying some Konig wheels, 17 x 7, offset 40, 114.3 x 5 bolt pattern, and i will use 215/45/17 tires....do you guys think i will have a problem?

Yea man, im debating whether to get those 17's and use my stock tires (cheaper, wheels are only 680)and maybe drop it later. OOORRR getting 18's (more $$$, need to buy w/ tires) and leave at stock height...

kinda balances out?

Maybe you can help me guys, kinda similar question.
My car is a mazda 6 2007, comes with 18 inches wheels on it with an offset of 60mm, i want to change my wheels, but i can't find wheels with that kind of offset, i find many at 42 or 45mm. I don't really know the exact witdh of my original wheel, well, tires are 215-45-18. Can i change the wheels for other wheels with an offset of 42 or 45 wihout changing anything on the car?
