what to upgrade for bigger turbo ??

Hello everyone, I'm looking into an atp turbo upgrade and am kind of new at this. I was wondering what kind of things need to be beefed up when running around 20 pounds of boost etc. Pistons, rings, valves or drivetrain upgrades any information is very much appreciated

what size turbo?

do you have an accessport/standback/some tuning method?

you will need a tuner
a upgraded internals kit/can driven fuel pump
step colder spark plugs
and i don't think anyone will say a bad idea would be a new electronic boost control solenoid.
a better top mount or a front mount intercooler setup.

those would be your main items while upgrading.

when you wanna turn up the boost more or perhaps make a little more boost down low building your motor is a must. stupid skinny con-rods.

I just had a BNR stage 2 installed and I had a Cobb Accessport already installed along with Cobb Air intake and turbo inlet. For this unit, there were two remaining limiting factors that had to be replaced - the fuel pump (I went with cp-e) and the downpipe (I went with cp-e catted dp). While I was at it I had the diff mount and engine mount replaced and good thing, as the old ones were smoked. I kept the stock exhaust because I wanted the car to stay quiet, and I'm sure that would have helped a little bit. The only remaining thing the tuner recommended was a new TMIC... which I'll eventually do, but probably not until after coilovers and sway bars.

trev, what are you current mods. In order to get the most out of your turbo, and I'm guessing you are going with a 30 or 35r, you'll need 3" or bigger intake/exhaust and depending on the power/boost you want to make - upgraded MAP and MAF. Plus everything zinger said, plus mounts, plus probably a ton of other sh*t. Think very nice and hard before going with a big turbo - it'll cost you dearly (I learned the hard way).

18 PSI boost and crappy 91 Octane - 265 AWHP and 305 FT-LBs torque.

At what sea level? And what Dyno were you using.

If you have a BNR stage 2 and cob you should make more than that. Then again I dont see you having the upgraded fuel pump.. You need that. Everbody I literally know with a Speed 3 that has done a Cobb AP and just boltons has Blown there motor. They did not have an upgraded Fuel pump

thats not bad numbers considering some dyno's read low and 18psi is not a ton of boost.

Theres bolton ones at COBB tuning making more power than that with the stock turbo and STAGE 1 tune.. I think one made like 290.. Im starting to think Dynos dont mean crap then again they dont :)

The tuning was done at UMS tuning in Phoenix in the 'winter'. Phoenix is at 1100 ft above sea level. Outside air temp was probably 60F. I got a cp-E upgraded fuel pump. The day before they tuned my car, they had a Arizona Mazda Club tuning day, and the best speed 6 with only bolt on's was 245 AWHP, so I figure that the stage two was worth at least 20 AWHP. Since I didn't do a full exhaust (only downpipe) and haven't upgraded to a better TMIC, both of which are mods that most people do, I'm thinking it might be worth more that 20 AWHP but I can't quantify it. 'Seat of the pants' was pretty damn good compared to the cobb map I was running before. Yes, I should have had them dyno it first to see where I started from. Oops.

Oh you have stock exhaust and DP... Yea You will pick up a good amount of HP from those two mods.
Yea it seems you did pretty good I guess. When you get those other mods you should be closer to 300

I went with the cp-E catted downpipe but chose not to do the full exhaust for noise concerns. I did expect to be closer to 300 but there was certainly a step increase in the way the motor pulls... probably due to 300 ft-lbs of torque. I would guess that exhaust and tmic would give me another 10-20 HP but for my purposes - the speed 6 is my 'fun' car and not a daily driver - what I have now is cool. I'm going after suspension next.

I would be interested to know if there is a way to quantify the impact of using this crappy 91 octane fuel. I'll bet that with 93/94 octane, full exhaust and tmic I'd be right around 300 AWHP.

How about changing to a top mounted T3? I make a nice twin scroll manifold which will allow you to use any turbo you want rather than being stuck with ATP and that nasty small turbine inlet.
