What the flip?! According to Mazda's 06 and 07 published information...

2006 Mazda5
157hp @ 6500 rpm
148lb/ft @ 3500 rpm

2007 Mazda5
153hp @ 6500 rpm
148lb/ft @ 4500 rpm

Not much difference. Four horsepower? you won't be able to tell between the two if you drove them one after another. put a cold air intake and exhaust system on the 07 and you might add four horsepower. to get back up there with the '06. think of it that way. lol.

Yeah I just noticed that. seems like a lot less torque. That is rather odd. four horsepower dropped and no telling how much torque, but a hell of alot more than 4 lbs/ft. lol

2006 was SAE, too. Have the SAE specs changed? Not quite sure how SAE works...

But I agree, 4hp is negligible and not a big deal... I'm honestly happy with the zoom I get from my 5. I'm mostly concerned with the how and why?

Nevermind I guess... pretty much the same thing happened to the MX-5 and both engines in the 6. Looks like the SAE strikes again.

Mazda may have adapted the new SAE method of hp/tq measurement. We have not changed the engine performance in anyway. It is just that simple the hp is measured at 4500 RPM.
153 HP is the rating for the 2007 end of story

You will see "ALL" manufacurers following suit for 2007

Funny... SAE is all about making everybody uniform among hp measurement standards... except for the same exact car from one year to the next! Seems kinda goofy (flash)

SAE changed there system in 2005, but I couldn't find any data about when Mazda made there changes. If thats the case then its the exact same motor and it really didn't loose anything.... but

What gets me is the 4500 thing. Thats not where they measured the hp, thats where the peak torque value was measured out of the entire rev range. The 2006 atleast had a diffrent cam timing/fuel/spark map that gave it a bit more torque than say a 2.3 in a 3. Thats why it lacks a few hp at peak when compared to the same 2.3 powerplant. The new SAE changes shouldn't have affected where the peaks in the power curve occur at just there values. Id honestly say it probably has more to do with changes made to the ecm, maybe to solve some of the odd ecm issues people have complained about or an emitions deal.

Another possibility is they could have changed intake manifold design or cam profile. The fuel timing map is also a possibility.

I bet it's the new "non-flammable" exhaust system.

FYI, Mazda has adapted to the new SAE system. Just read it this weekend in our annual auto guide (was checking if the 5 was quoted as well as last year, where it won the car of the year award).

So don't worry, it's the same engine.

The author was also talking about an eventual possibility for mazda to port the CX-7 turbo engine to the Mz5... mmmm, that's be interesting :).

Stop by the dealer and ask them about this and all i got was this(dunno), Also got on the list for a mazdaspeed3 for the wife, and one won't even notice the differance on the power between the 06 and 07. Also Jandree22 how is your mazda5 , the picture you have of it at night is great!!!!!!! angelo

Beyond loving it... It's so usable, high build quality, and most importantly, Zoom Zoom!!! It's so fun, contrary to me starting this topic, I'm VERY surprised with how nicely that lil 2.3 pulls. And family, co-workers, friends have been complimenting it after they get over the initial "WTF is that?!" reaction ;) Actually, one co-worker just bought a 3 over this summer, so of course he was all excited to see my purchase... we usually park close together anyways.

Great to hear that, i love mine too, when i get or buy new camera i will post some pic's of mine with some of the ext. mods, will be working on a few int. ones soon (need to save money first). Enjoy! zoomzoom mazda5(drive2)
